Question about 1993 Subaru Legacy

2 Answers

Well I am in a bit of a jam. I have a 1993 Subaru legacy wagon (2.2 L) and I live in Mexico... a few years back my pulley went bad so I took it in and my mechanic did some magic having it rethreaded since Subi parts are nowhere to be found.. that fix held for a couple years with a couple more rethreads but after the last one it became clear that I needed to get the real part so that the crankshaft wouldn't get worn down. So it sat, poor Subi, for a few months. Finally I replaced the part, got my car back on the road and it only lasted a few days before it started losing all its punch and making a bunch of noise. So I let it sit for a while till I found another mechanic who had actually heard of a subaru (a couple more months) and he had me fetch a MAF sensor and some spark plug cables. I also had him change the fuel filter. I was briefly back on the road but once again... no go. It didn't even last the night before it just shut off while driving, then again at a light... and then it just wouldn't start. Then the mechanic said it was the fuel pump. I had it replaced and the I think I am back on the road for a day and half... this morning I got stuck in a bit of stop and go traffic and once again it died. At first I could restart right away but a few minutes later it quit on me and wouldn´t restart, I let it sit for a few minutes and it restarted without a problem. So back to the mechanic... He said it was most probably the alarm shutting off flow to engine. So I go have alarm deactivated and get back on the road again.. all is well till rush hour and then once again... it dies... at first it restarts right away, then it won´t. I let it sit for a few minutes and it will start up fine. I asked mechanic if he thought it was the fuel pump relay and he said it wasn´t because it starts and he didn´t think it will start at all if it is the relay.. anyway I need guidance.

Hi! I suspect a faulty fuel filter. The filter may be clogged with dirt and rust causing the car to stall. Once the dirt and rust subsides, there goes the engine running again and when it blocks the fuel line it dies again. Drain the fuel tank and separate dirt and rust and replace the fuel filter. This will solve the issue. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Oh alright, It must be the throttle body itself where the MAF (mass air flow) sensor is connected. The solenoid may be burnt.

First of all, find a mechanic who know cars and not lawn mowers. If a fuel pump relay overheats it can open until it cools and then work fine. What you are describing though sounds like an ignition module or crank position sensor which when subjected to heat and electricity can cause an open to the circuit and all the trouble you described. The alarm was (chances are) disabled for reason. Have a scanner put on when the problem is duplicated so that you can look at the data and see if the cps signal is alive. If it is we need to look at the ignition module. It wouldn't hurt to have the fuel pressure tested but only while it has faulted out. Let me know what they find and I will continue to assist.

Yes these cars are the same as far as parts go.
You will need to change some wiring on the automatic car for the manual swap to work without changing the wiring harness.

I have a 1993 subaru legacy wagon and just had the belt(s) for the alt and a/c replaced and Midas says I should replace the "serpentine" belt now too for a cost of $700. Does the car have a serpentine...

Your car does have a serpentine belt, and it costs like $12.00 new. I had a friend of mine who was a mechanic, and he put mine in when it went bad for free. It didn't take him very long, so I'm not sure how that $700 estimate can be accurate. Even if you bought a belt at a store and paid $75/ hr labor at a garage it shouldn't over $100...It just doesn't take that long. You do need a specific tool for the belt tensioner, but Midas is trying to rip you off.
