Pcv valve location to replace - 1996 Dodge Dakota

All these answers are WRONG!!! The PCV valve isn't located anywhere near the valve cover but underneath the Intake manifold behind the secondary air pump. The PCV hose starts just to the right of the base of the Oil dipstick tube and leads to the right (driver side) to a rubber T. The PCV valve is actually inside this T. You have to unscrew the clamps and carefully pull out the old Plastic PCV insert/valve and replace it with a new one. Most of the time you will also have to replace the hoses since they will be full of sludge/crud and may have gotten brittle from the heat of the 1.8 engine. It is very difficult to access the PCV valve on the 1.8 engine and unless you have doublejointed hands you may need to remove the intake manifold to get to it. But some have done it without removing the intake manifold. PCV Basics
PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation.
All car engines have a PCV valve and it is located on top of the motor's valve cover. There is a vacuum line attached to it. It pulls out of the valve cover and if you shake it, you should hear a marble knocking inside it. If you shake it and don't hear anything, it's bad. It costs less than 5 bucks to replace.


Location
* 4.0L is located in the valve cover near the brake booster
* 5.0L is located behind the intake manifold (engine rear)

NOTE-Most people that are asking actually want to know not only where is it but also how do you get at it to replace it.

Often answers say that you need to dismantle the intake manifold to get to it.
This is a major and unnecessary approach, for example, on the 2000 Explorer with a 5.0 V8

Below is an additional suggestion on how to access a PCV valve on an 2000 5.0 V8 Explorer

The PCV valve is on the rear of the intake manifold (the intake manifold is also on top of the crankcase so PCV valve has direct access to crankcase)

To replace valve and/or its bushing:

• Disconnect one battery terminal, unbolt/unplug the PCM cable (Powertrain Control Module connector located on the firewall) and firewall ground connection, depress underneath tab and slide the main cable connector (located to the right of PCM connector) off its mount.

• Move the cables to the right and now you can easily reach down behind the intake manifold to the PCV valve

• Service valve and its bushing if needed, reverse actions to reassemble

The valve is located under the thermostat housing facing the front of the car. There is very little room to work with here. You'll have to pull the hose up from the valve then pull the valve out.

If I remember correctly this vehicle has a plastic plenum and the pcv valve is inside the plenum. Only time it is usually replaced is when the intake gasket needs replaced (and it will).

What throws everybody is that the pcv valve does not insert into the valve cover as it does most cars. This one on the 1999 explorer is located directly behind or in back of the engine on the top of the manifold. You can spot this easier if you take off the covering(four screws) on manifold then you will see two hoses that connect to a plastic pcv valve (that's what threw me). this should help.

So, when looking at the engine from above, on the right of the exhaust.
Procedure to replace it
1) Lift and support the front end of your car, or drive up on ramps
2) Get under the front of your car. The PCV Valve is located behind the exhaust manifold, a few inches below the valve cover.
3) Push up on the PCV valve to pop it out of the tube, or pull. You can get it out of the rubber tube with some effort.
4) Remove the rubber elbow from the top of the PCV valve. This can be re-used if it's not squishy. It can also be replaced cheaply.
5) Put the elbow on the new PCV Valve
6) Re-attach the elbow to the PCV tube
7) Push the new PCV valve back down into the large rubber tube

The PCV valve can be located in several places. The most common location is in a rubber grommet in the valve cover. It can be installed in the middle of the hose connections, as well as installed directly in the intake manifold.

Once the PCV valve is located, make sure all the PCV system hoses are properly connected and that they have no breaks or cracks.

Remove the air cleaner and inspect the air and crankcase filters. Crankcase blowby can clog these with oil. Clean or replace such filters.

Oil in the air cleaner assembly indicates that the PCV valve or hoses are plugged.

Make sure you check these and replace the valve and clean the hoses and air cleaner assembly.

When the PCV valve and hose are in satisfactory condition and there is oil in the air cleaner assembly, perform a cylinder compression test to check for worn cylinders and piston rings.
