Question about Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Ok so i have a 1988 pontiac Firebird trans am GTA 5.0l 305 TPI and i cant get her too stay running after i get close too the sweet spot of timing. When i do get her too run she only wants too idle at about 600rpm. Was wondering could a missing EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) pipe cause here too run low rpm even with it plugged?

1988 pontiac trans am gta shiftline breaking.

Im assuming you have a cable and not a set of rods for the transmission. There should be 2 cables coming from the shifter console. One goes to the throttle body the other one goes to the trans. I had the same problem on an older model Grand Prix. Friction is causing the cable to snap. It usually breaks around a week or so after installing the new one. The motor needs to be grounded to the chassis. You lost a ground wire somewhere. Check the back passenger side of the engine next to the heater box. There should be a ground strap there. If not, throw one in somewhere. As long as it runs from the motor to the firewall it should fix your problem. At the time, I ran a wire from the top of the air cleaner to the inside of the fender. No more broken cables. Hopefully this will help.

88 Trans-Am GTA 350 5.7 TPI fuel injected...Car will start and run 10 mins and then just die. Wont start for 2 hours and then when it does start it only runs 10 mins then dies again. Dont know what to do...

Your fuel filter may need to be replaced and the other area that needs to ab addressed would be a ICM (ignition control module) going bad. Common for ether issues to cause you the same problems.
You can have your ICM tested at Auto Zone free of charge and you can also pick up the fuel filter from there.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

I have an 87 trans am with a 305 TPI with an unknown problem

Check the knock sensor on the right side of the block, below the head, and above the oil pan.Check to see if it is plugged up good. Then check the wire all the way up to the wire harness,to see if it is grounding out on the engine somewhere.I hope this was helpful261213.jpg

1954 305 firebird Runs when warm Wont turnover when cold plz help

If the smell of fuel is there, check the plugs. Are they all firing.Look at the plugs and see if any look different to the others in color. If so check that cylinder.Check the lead to that plug.Is it ok.At idle, pull the lead on and off and see if the revs drop.If you get a zap,all is good:) Or use a heavy rag.Check all this first. You may have an 8 that is running on 6.Basics 1st.Hope this helps
