Question about 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Automotive driveability 1999 Chevy malibu 2.4DOHC Stalled and refused to stay running. No code was ever thrown. Did a series of repairs that improved the symptoms each time. Still stalls, sputters at idle (like a dead miss). I have already replaced both coils, coolant temp sensor, cleaned and re-gapped spark plugs (customer has a very low budget), cleaned fuel injectors, throttle body, and fuel rail. I'm thinking the timing may be off or another sensor may be out.

I'd replace the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure.

Fuel pressure great at the filter and at the rail. Runs good at high rpms but dies at low rpms. I was leaning towards timing. what do you think? I know the 2.4 is a pretty high tolerance engine.

I don't believe there is anyway to change the timing. I would double check the firing order. Also check for any vacuum leaks. Or take a look at the EGR valve.

It's to the right of the throttle body, here is a link to a picture of the engine compartment and locations of the sensors:

have you changed the fuel filter? i would try that. failing that, i would have a back pressure test performed on the catalytic converter. sounds like it could be plugged. good luck!

Changing battery in 1999 chevy malibu

security will no be affected but if you don what to do things like re-set the clock or the car has a stereo with a code and you dont have the code anymore its better if you use a sigarret plug with a 9 volt battery they're sold at any automovile store specifically to maintain settings. hope this helps
you.

1999 chevy malibu LS

If the check engine light is on, I would take the car to an autoparts store and have them scan the computer for fault codes. Most parts stores will do the scan for free. It sounds like it could be a faulty idle air control valve, but getting the codes should end speculation and identify the faults that the computer has noted. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Chungs at idle and emission code is given. O2

At this juncture you need to interface vehicle with appropriate scanner such as GM TECH 1 or equvalent and retreive codes to begin diagnostic. You have numerous outboard sensor parameters that could cause your driveability problem and anything prior to this is speculation.

1999 olds alero stalls when put in gear

Runs fine when not put in gear? Sounds like transmission is stuck in "lock-up". Need to go to transmission or full automotive shop for repair. This is not something you want to attempt on your own unless you are experienced with removing valve bodies and solenoids from the inside of transmissions.

Before starting this job I would get a repair manual. This is not a easy job, 6+ hours for an experienced tech with all of the right tools. And you may have to discharge and recharge the AC system.
