If the gauge goes straight to half, even when the engine is stone cold, i would suspect a bad temperature gauge sending unit. you will find it near the thermostat housing. good luck!

The temperature gauge goes up when car starts to HOT like its out of calibration. the engine is not overheating

check that the wire to the temp sender unit has not fallen off and is shorting out on the head/block. The power comes from the ignition switch through the gauge down to the sender unit and because the sender is a temperature controlled resistance unit the voltage is very low and so the gauge reads cold . as the temperature heats up , the resistance is decreased and so the voltage is increased though the gauge and the needle reads higher.. Hench if the gauge goes directly to hot on start up the wire is shorting out or the sender unit is faulty.

If you have a vapour lock your engine will create steam easily but the coolant doesn't circulate. Or it is possible that your impellors on your water pump have corroded

2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

2003 chev impala 3.8 the temp gauge goes up 1/4 of the way..what shd the normal reading go to I wld think 1/2 way on the gauge? I just think the air shd be hotter when set on hi

During the winter time the engine may not produce enough heat to go half way. You can modify this by installing a hotter thermostat. But I would not go more that 20 degrees F though, or you could create issues for summer driving.

Be very careful as overheating can cause permanent damage to the head gasket. Now whenever an engine temp reaches half then the fan should start,so watch if this is working.Allow engine to run and watch the temp gauge goes up..Once it is half then the fan should start, if it does not replace thermostat..Else watch the radiator as it may be blocked.
