Just a long shot because I am only a novice with a project Jetta, but they do have a TPS (throttle position sensor) and if that is faulty, could be the cause.I think they are around $60 new for an aftermarket product.VW lists them for around $130 in Canada.Might want to check a salvage yard as you might be in for some trial and error as to the cause.

start procedure is to hold accelerator half down, turn key, wait for injector light to go out, then hold down clutch pedal and start. do not pump the gas. just hold it 1/2 down. when car starts, release gas and then rev it up until the alternator light goes out.

Where the plug for tranny on 96' jetta is located?

On the manual transmission you go through the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Its suppose to go 1/2 way up the teeth marks. Does it not say in the Chiltons manual? I can check when I get home.

Accelerator Loss

From my experience in owning a VW it souns electrical. Most issues with VWs are electrical related. Most likely a realy of some type. Could also be fuel injection but that is electronic too.

Trunk release

I had the same problem with my 96 jetta trek edition, solenoid was engaging but the trunk was jammed, went in via back seat, fold down the seat and crawled into the trunk unscrewed the latch, cleaned and greased the latch mechanism and hinges, then screwed latch back, no problem since. The fusebox is underneath the dashboard, if the fuse is good, test the solenoid to see if it is working correctly, be careful have an expert in electricity do the testing for you, if solenoid is good, might be your switch in your console, if the switch is good, might be mechanical, these are basic troubleshooting procedures.
