Question about 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Engine turns over but won't start

I have checked the coil and fuel pump fuse and relay. The engine is getting fuel at the rail.

The fuel pressure should be 58 psi. It can vary 5 psi but if it is more than that the engine will not have sufficent pressure to start.

Car wont start


My routine to check non-starting motors: (petrol/gas models)

  • Check immobilizer status
  • Check fuel supply -does it reach the fuel rail when starting. If not OK, check 12v supply to fuel pump when starting. If OK, fuel pump maybe dead.If not present, check fuel pump fuse and relay.
  • If fuel supply is OK, check spark ignition. If not OK, follow the supply circuit backwards to the ECM. Coils and/or ignition amplifier connector should have one 12v supply to it when ignition switch is on.
For Diesels with 'common rails' you can take same approach for fuel. No ignition testing possible. The diesel fuel pump still needs battery power. It will make some sound when IGN is on. If not, check ALL fuses and relays.

Car won't start?
First thing would be to check all your fuses. Most fuse boxes are located under the driver side dash panel. Some cars do have an extra set of fuses on passenger side kick panel (foot area on door side)
If all fuses are good, then next thing would be to test your relays with an ohmmeter.
If all your your relays and fuses are good, you will want to check for fuel and spark. A car needs air, fuel and spark to run.
To check for spark, you can purchase and use a spark tester.
If you cannot obtain a spark tester, then the next best thing would be an ohmmeter. You can test the power coming from your coil packs or distributor depending on what you have. On distributorless vehicles (one with coil packs) the coil pack are attached to an ignition module. This module is powered by the Crankshaft Position Sensor. This sensor can be tested with an ohmmeter. The Crankshaft Position Sensor is the first thing to be tested if you have no spark in any cylinder. If you have spark in some cylinders but not all, then check the coil pack (1 pack per 2 cylinders).
If you have a distributor, test the coil that provides the spark.
If you have plenty of good strong spark, then the next step would be to check for fuel.
Fuel system consists of Fuel Tank, Fuel Pump, Fuel pump Relay, Fuel Filter, Fuel Pressure Regulator and finally carberator or injectors.
Fuel injected systems have a fuel rail. On the fuel rail is a test port for fuel pressure. If you have a fuel pressure tester you can test how much fuel pressure you have. Or you can place a rag over the valve and press it in to see if there is pressure. If not pressure, check that pump is running. You should hear it run for a few seconds when key is first placed in the ON position. If pump is not running, check fuses and pump relay.
If pump is running but fuel pressure is low, check for leaks, plugged fuel filter, or leaky injector.
If your check engine light is on, then you likely have a faulty sensor or circuit and should have the engine codes read with a code reader/scanner to pinpoint exact problem area.

I've got a 2005 chrysler 300 and it won't start I have changed fuel pump, camshaft and the crankshaft sensor coils and spark plugs and i still wont start what could be causing it not to start?


Try to determine if it is fuel or ignition related.
Turn key to on, do you hear the fuel pump turn on for a couple of seconds? It should come on briefly to pressurize the lines and fuel rail on the engine. Do you have fuel at the engine under pressure? Easiest and preferred way is to check fuel pressure with a pressure gauge at the test port on the fuel rail. With key on, pressure on mpfi systems should be 40-50 psi.
If there is gas in the fuel rail, test ignition by checking for spark on the end of a plug wire, with the engine cranking over. If you have a blue snapping spark, then ignition is probably good-may want to check more than one plug wire. Hold the metal terminal end of plug wire 1/4 inch from a ground on the engine, the engine block or a bolt or metal bracket. Verify a blue snapping spark, repeatedly, as the engine cranks. An orange spark, intermittent spark, or no spark points to an ignition problem. One thing you haven't changed is the ignition control module. This module, when signaled by the pcm, is what cuts the primary current to the coils for spark to be generated.

If you have both gas and spark, check the fuel injector circuit. Post back if you need help with that. There should be an injector fuse that needs checked. Also a fuse for the fuel pump, if no pump action, besides the fuel pump relay.

My 96 volvo 850 gtl2.4L ENGINE CRANK OVER BUT WONT START I REPLACED THE INGNITION COIL \ POWER STAGE WITH NO RESULTS.PLEASE HELP


Reasons for engine turning over and not firing are simple. Spark or fuel. If you've changed the coil packs then chances are it's a fuel issue. Get in cab and turn ignition to second position whilst listening to back seat. You should hear the faint noise of the fuel pump working. If you can't, I suggest you firstly check your manual to find the fuse/relay for the fuel pump and check that. If they are fine, you need to replace fuel pump.

If you can hear it working and it still won't start, remove the fuel line going to injector rail and point into a jar whilst someone turns engine over. You should have fuel coming out. If this is fine, go back to ignition, remove a spark plug and turn engine over checking for a spark.

My bet is your fuel pump has packed-up. Good luck diagnosing.

Check for fuel pressure on the fuel rail while turning the key to start,if there is fuel pressure(enough)then the injectors are not pulsing(allowing fuel into the intake).The pick up coil in the distributor,will be the problem,unless it is distribuless ignition,then the cam sensor would be at fault.

Today my 1990 nissan terrano/pathfinder just stopped running. wouldnt start back up but would turn over fine........


Sudden death in vehicle is usually based on something electrical. Check fuses and relays with fuses. Check 1) spark on each plug in turn 2) crank sensor 3) coil 4) cam sensor 5) main relay. Put ignition on position 2 and listen at the open fuel filler pipe for the pre-pump operating. Listen for main pump operation. (If unsure what it is you are listening for remove the fuse for the pump and you nshould notice it being quieter) Check fuel rail for pressure (there is a Schrader 'tire' valve on the fuel rail for pressure testing purposes). If fuel flow is low then this could be blocked fuel filter or tired pump. Finally make sure throttle body is good and clean internally at least and that associated idle air valve is clean and working. With fuel air and spark at the right moment the engine should run. My gut feeling is the crank sensor

2000 kia sportage pump is working relays have been


there is a splice for fuel injectors at the front of the fuel rail conduit and electric tape will need to be removed to see if it is ok then clean up all engine grounds and ecm grounds on passenger side kick panel if this doesnt help check coils and crank sensor
