Car will start good, but only moves in reverse. No loss of power. No power in all forward gears. Stalls out in Drive, ect.

I think i have enough gas, and yes i think it is a engine or trans problem, not a low gas problem. Remember, it runs ok in reverse. This problem has slowly been developing over a year. Slowly losing power in forward only.

Do you agree it is a trany problem?

I have to assume a few things here because you did not list them in your ad.
1.) the vehicle has an automatic transmission
2.) the vehicle has rear drum brakes

This is a classic sign of a locked torque converter and/or siezed rear brakes

try to back the vehicle into a grassy or gravel area and see if you can move forward
If the rear brakes are the issue the front wheels will spin well but you will see the rear wheels do not move

If you have rear disc brakes then #2 doesn't apply but #1 is your cause!

I agree it sounds like a trans problem but if its been developing over a year something doesn't add up

traditionally, when the torque converter locks up it stalls the engine since it is similar to trying to start the car in 5th gear

a trans problem is more likely to be that the engine revs high but the car won't move

let me know if there is anything else I can do in order to gain a 4 thumbs-up rating

Car starts and runs perfect in park. Car runs in reverse perfectly. Engine runs rough when put in any forward gear (auto trans) and loses power. May move forward some and then stalls or stalls immediatly when put in gear. Cannot rev engine in forward gears, dies right away. Previous owner took it to Toyota garage several times, when problem started to appear. eg: poor excelaration when leaving stop sign at times. Problem became worst and worst. They continued to say nothing was wrong. If they only gave it a floor test in Park or neutral, they would find nothing. Previous owner did say that problem stared after the Toyota dealer did a tune up. Before that ran perfect. Maybe coincidence. 110,000 km on car. Perfect shape.

I am going to stick with my first guess which is the torque converter unless you can tell me front wheels spin in the grass/gravel

Good luck and keep us posted
Since I am #3 on your list I'll assume you have better answers
but let me know if you need anything else

Thanks for your reply's. No, the front wheels will not spin on the grass. The engine runs rough and moves some or stalls. But will a siezed tourque converter allow it to run well in reverse? This is what confuses me. When I first bought the car, I could drive it, although it some what acted up. Now it is not driveable.

Is there a computer in the car that does not allow the engine to run if there is a trany problem.

Again, thanks for your time on this.

    alright...
    got my tranny book out

this is direct from Toyota for Camry that will not move in any FORWARD gear...

    • Check forward clutch

    • No. 2 one-way clutch

    • 1st and reverse brake

    • 2nd coast brake

    • 2nd brake and direct clutch
However, I cannot find any Toyota information on stalling in forward gears... just my only personal experience with race cars and engine performance
Every time we had one that stalled only in forward gears it lead to a Torque converter

I'll call my trans friend tonight after work and see what he says

Tranny guy can remember anything specific but feels fairly sure on an 87 Camry we can rule out the converter

However, he did remind me about some bad engine/trans mounts on that vehicle
The mounts would cause the engine to rock so far forward in gear that it would actually totally pinch off the air snorkel and stall the car... kind of like the old days when you would smoother the carb with a rag

to confirm... pop the hood and watch the engine as you move the shifter from reverse to drive

you should see some movement but not much difference forward/reverse

  • silvesro Jun 02, 2010

Ok. You might have something here. This solution was suggested a year ago. But I was to look for a loose wire or devise that was opening when engine rocked in forward, but not in reverse. Could not find anything, so discounted advise. But yours makes more sense and would account for all symptons, including the fact that it will sometimes move forward, but realy slow and rough.. Lets hope you are right. A lot cheaper fix than a trany problem. Tomorrow, after work, I will check it out and let you know. Thanks

  • silvesro Jun 02, 2010

I had a look at hee air intake. Not sure what I am looking for. Our we talking about the air intake where the air filter is? That seems to big to pinch off.

If this was a slow developing problem, and the engine has plenty of power,it will be a transmission internal problem,it may have a clutch band worn out, especialy if this was a slow development

Car only has 110,000 km (65000 miles) on oddometer. I suspect trany. Sometimes car will go forward very poorly, but the engine does not run well at any time that it is in forward gears, and sometimes it justs quits as soon as put in to a forward gear. Engine runs very rough. You cannot apply brakes and rev engine, as if trany is slipping. Any application of gas, stalls engine. Reverse is great.

Yeah this is an internal problem with the transmission, have it overhauled to repair the problem.

I am sorry, but this is the only solution I know to fix the problem a transmission overhaul.

  • silvesro Jun 05, 2010

Your solution may be the right one. One question. Can a badly worn band cause the transmision to sieze and therefore stall the engine. Thanks

First if the fuel level in your tank is low get it filled up. Bad gas or gas that has been sitting around will cause symptomssuch as the one as you car has. Even filling stations sell gas like crazy these days when the prices fall and the the stawage tank that holds their gas becomes very low. That point many contaminates will be pumped into somebodys car such as yours too.
By the time you run the car down at least 5 or 6 gallons after a fill up it should run better. If not possible to drive it in for a fill up fill it at home with gas cans. Borrow some if possible to save on trips back and forth

I do hope this will cure your problem or you have some sort of engine internal problem, or fuel feed line problem such as a bent line, or a bad transmission

If it has been a year doing this has a tune up with a fuel filter change been done? You will need to check for a bent fuel line too. You know if a fuel line is restricted by a bent line or a clogged filter it will run better without a load on the engine. The transmission when in gear is consider putting a load on the engine as well

  • silvesro Jun 01, 2010

The car runs perfect in reverse. No loss of power.

Reverse is geared the highest so it will run much easier than any other gear.Check for any obstruction in the fuel delivery system
When a trans goes bad, 1st and reverse gears are the first to go bad by slipping or not shifting smoothly into gear

Is my engine blown or is gasket blown?

if the engine starts and runs then there is small doubt that it is blown
if it is not over heating then the gasket will be ok
if it is not knocking or rattling bad then it is not blown
loss of power can amount to lots of problems
first point of call is to have the fault codes read as sensor /TCM faults will cause the rest

Galant vrg-gdi-when i engage reverse the car stalls--but once you start moving --ok

You vehicle uses a Idle air control motor,(IAC) when you put a load on the vehicle (Drive or reverse) the ECM detects the load and idles up the IAC, even for the A/C (air conditioner) You can try a throttle body cleaning. or a new IAC

Won't back up!

well slipping in reverse would be tranny...;but by saying the engine spits,,,sputters ,,,stalls,,,,sounds like engine not enough power to drive it in reverse...i'm guessing forward no problems...first thing comes to mind is in reverse engine moves on motor mounts as you give it gas..could be wiring harness rubbing on block causing short condition..when in forward engine moves opisite direction...while idling in park, shake wiring harness all over different spots see if you can simulate the condition.....are there any engine codes....also does it have a problem in reverse on a flat surface... or only on a incline....if only on an incline check fuel pressure while in reverse on incline.. see if loosing pressure for some reason..on incline fuel goes to lowest part of tank...

1.car stalls out when you put it in gear, mainly reverse. 2.jerks and stalls when starting forward..A4..1.8T 2002 audi 1.8 turbo L4 FI 20V 112,000 miles

Sounds like your TCC (torque converter clutch) solenoid is causing improper lockup, causing the engine to stall. It works similar to putting your hand on a ceiling fan to stop the blades. I believe this is where you will find your problem.

Good Luck!
