  • kyokhan May 31, 2010

google can clarify what an expansion valve is. its an element involved with the AC and if broken, the AC won't work. I have a new one and want to install it myself.

My friend, your question did not contain many of the elements that it should have. I shouldn't have to ask you what your question means ... you could have made that clear from the outset. Had you said "Im working on my car AC and I need help with the expansion valve ..." I would have been on the same sheet of paper with you immediately ... If YOU google 'expansion valve', you would see there are more than 1,220,000 hits ... if you think I am inclined to go through that to see if I can qualify your question ... well my friend ... think again.

Now that I have wasted all that energy ... I must say if you are a USA or Canada resident, for you to do this yourself, you must hold a special AC license and have special freon recovery equipment to do this job yourself. There are other special tools required as well ... are you so qualified? If you don't have this equipment and license, you can't legally purchase the materials and supplies required. If it turns out that you do obtain it ... through some means ... someone else has put their license in jeopardy not to mention taking work from a qualified mechanic who could do this job for you.

So to answer your question, I suggest you take the ASE certificataion classes concerning auto Air Conditioning ... that will guide you through the process you must follow to do this job yourself. Here is the link for additional information: http://www.ase.com/

Thank you for the 4 thumbs up rating for my response. Good luck with your training and ultimate repair.

An after thought ... If you are not taking the ASE class ...

Many Vo-Tech schools offer auto mechanics classes to adults during night school ... perhaps there is such a school in your area. Perhaps you can get enrolled there in the class, learn how to do this procedure ... use their equipment and fix your AC.

Where is expansion valve located

The Expansion valve is located in the evaporator box

On this year Nissan it's not to bad of a job. The dash doesn't need to be removed like the newer cars.

  1. To replace the expansion valve, you will need to discharge the AC system. Remove the two AC lines from the evaporator.
  2. Then you will need to remove the glove box
  3. Then you will need to unbolt the evaporator box
  4. Tip it back and remove.
  5. Once you have the evaporator box removed, then you can replace the expansion valve. I would also clean the evaporator box as well since you will have it removed.

Where i the 2000 Lincoln Continental expansion valve orfice tube located

Right next to the blower motor box is the evaporator box,the expansion valve is connected to it,to remove and replace, you will need to remove freon,I just had my evaporator replaced with a new expansion valve on my 85 nissan truck, was going to do myself, but I am not set up to remove freon and do a leak test,so I took my truck to Midas, and it works great now.

Trying to replace a rear ac expansion valve for a 2000 dodge durango 4.7 but dont know exactly were it is. Or how to get replace it

Hi,
The expansion valve is located in the evaporator core, it is a brass made metal w/ temperature sensor tubing. Getting that expansion valve requires you to pull down the entire rear A/C blower box.
Am just curious, why are you replacing that valve?
An A/C tech will be better to do that job so that he will clean also the entire system and freon charging.
Hope that helps you out!

Your Honda has a expansion valve, not an orfic tube, to remove and replace expansion valve, labor time per Mitchell labor guide is 4.5 hrs, expansion valve screw into evaporator, evaporator in under the dash in your car.

A/C Problem

in order to do this job properly you need special recovery equipment to recover the freon and after the job you need to have a vacuum pump put on the system to get all the air out and check for leaks prior to charging
what you can do is have a shop recover the freon then go home and do the work your self then go back to the shop and have them pull a vacuum on it then charge it

you can charge the system your self but if you dont pull a vacuum it will never blow very cold

is it the evaporator leaking or the expansion valve leaking or both?

get your self a good repair manual and it will walk you through either of these jobs
