We will can really offer any help other than to have codes scanned and see what code or codes is stored in the computer there is just to many things that can cause a check engine light to be set.

"The 'check engine' light is reserved only for powertrain problems that could have an impact on the emissions systems," says John Van Gilder, General Motors' lead OBD development engineer.

Exactly what the OBD system looks for depends on the make, model and year. The original systems varied widely in their capabilities. Some did little more than check whether the various electronic sensors and actuators were hooked up and working.

That changed by 1996, when, under OBD II regulations, carmakers were required to install a much more sophisticated system that essentially acts like a built-in state emissions testing station. The computer monitors and adjusts dozens of components and processes. For example, it continually samples exhaust emissions as they come out of the engine and again when they leave the catalytic converter, a device that removes carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon pollutants from the exhaust. The system also monitors your car's fuel system to ensure that gasoline vapors are not escaping into the atmosphere through a leak or even a loose or missing gas cap. In most cases, if a problem occurs, the computer will wait to see if it corrects itself before turning on the light. Modern OBD II systems are so thorough that state testing centers increasingly are checking for any stored trouble codes and foregoing the traditional tailpipe emissions test.

Keep in touch.

My 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander turns over and cranks but will not start. The engine light comes on but I don't know how to check the code or if there's any codes to find out what the problem is

It is not starting most likely due to lack/no fuel or no spark. You will have to determine if there is a fuel supply. Can you hear the fuel pump come on if you remove the gas cap and put your ear close while turning the key to the on position? If you can't hear it operate for a second or two, it may not be working. Pull a spark plug wire off the spark plug and hold it over the engine and crank the motor. If a continuos spark is present the ignition system is ok.

When starting vehicle, the cooler fan comes on and the vehicle wont start. When this happens the engine check light does not come on.

Good morning I don't know what you are working on but possibly your ignition switch, that would explain why when you turn it off and then turn it back on it works. I don't know if this helps you or not. I know when your switch is going out you will get power to some things power not to others. I hope this helps you good luck

Which senser controls the starting of my chevy s10 it will not start

There is no sensor that controls starting. No starts are usually from lack of gas or loss of spark. That is, if the battery is strong enough-charged up enough-that it will crank the engine over.
If your engine is cranking over, check for a fuel problem: spray some starting fluid into the air intake-take the big air boot off where it connects to the engine and spray a shot or two of starting fluid in there. Then try starting. If the engine fires a bit and tries to run, then you know it wasn't getting gas. You will then need to test and check if the fuel pump is working and putting gas up to the engine.
If the starting fluid made no difference, then checking for spark would be next-maybe the ignition system has a problem.
Let me know what you found out, and we can go from there. Have any repairs been done recently? What year S-10, what size engine, and how many miles? Did this just start happening? The more you can tell us, the better chance we have of helping you.

The engine crank but it wont start, when we are traveling the vehicle lose its power. we check the fuel pump and it dose not work, still wont start

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. I am assuming the fuel pump works. If it doesn't, check the pump, fuses, and relay. Check your fuel pump button if you have one. This vehicle is new so you may have an electrical issue. Is the check engine light on? If so, you need to have the computer scanned. Many things can cause the engine to not start. If could be fuel related. Check your fuel pressure to make sure it is normal. If it is not, check your fuel filter, lines, and injectors. It may be the ignition system, such as plugs/coils, wires, distributor, coil packs, distributor cap. You need fuel, fire, and air to start the car. I don't know how many miles you have, but if it is up there, you need to check the plugs, coils, ect. I need to know miles, if your check engine light is on. It could be the starter, starter solenoid, or ignition module. Post back so I can help you. Thanks.

I just got a 1991 Dynasty Dodge knowing it needed repairs. Vehicle tries to start, but doesn't. Had starter replaced and the battery is pretty new. I'm not sure if it's the fuel pump, I'm...

Need to check if you have fuel pressure and spark, then you can go from there, don't just throw parts at it.
Spray brake cleaner in the intake to see if it starts, if it does start then this eliminates the spark, if it doesn't then check for spark, get back to me and let me know

I recently bought it - with 'check engine' light on. It shortly after developed intermittent starting problem: the engine starts beautifully and runs for exactly 3 seconds... and shuts down. A few seconds...

Check engine light WILL reveal all - any good parts store can do an OBII scan for you and most like Autozone,Advance, etc... will do it free. Who knows how long previous owner drove w/light on - and a general rule of thumb - "longer the light is on, the bigger the problem gets".

1989 toyota supra hesitates and won't start

If Engine Starts with accelerator pedal depressed , check idle speed control valve (if equipped) and wiring connection. Did you check for vacuum leaks. Do you know if your ignition timing is correct? How did you check your fuel pump? I take it no codes have been set, so if not there are several things to check for when the engine stalls #1 is to check cold start injector and cold start injector time switch. If engine stalls sometimes- check airflow meter and connectors You can tap the connector or relay or wiggle and notice if there is a slight change in the engine idle.
