Question about Ford Tempo

2 Answers

I have a 1995 Ford Tempo diesel, and I am not getting any fuel and it won't crank. I can spray it with ether and it will crank up and run just for a second, and then cut off. Anyone know what the problem may be?

Hi as your engine is diesel then their is no electronic fuel pump so if you are getting no fuel and you have fuel in the tank then the only problem could be the pump.

if how ever you have ran out of diesel and have filled the tank up and still having problems starting then what your going to need to do is undo the fuel pipe on top of the injectors then you can either turn the engine over until you have fuel coming out the pipes or if you have a hand primer on the engine you can pump this until you have fuel coming out then tighten the pipe back up then it should start.
you could also undo the fuel pipe from the injectors just to check if you do actually have fuel their or not.

have you checked if the diesel filter is getting any diesel is the diesel filter full or empty, if its empty and you are sure their is fuel in the tank then this would point towards the pump being at fault.

dont rely on the fuel gauge being correct this could be faulty or stuck so it may be worth just putting some diesel in just to rule out having no diesel in the tank.

if you have ran out of fuel it will take ages for the fuel to pump through so undoing the diesel fuel pipes from the injectors will allow the fuel to pump through faster and once you have diesel coming out of these pipes it should then start first time when you have done them back up.

let me know if you have fuel after you have undone the fuel pipes, let me know if the diesel filter has fuel in the filter holder,

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

It is most likely the fuel pump that has gone out.

You will have to prime the fuel filter, fill it up and it might take a few times of priming the system, there maybe some bleed valves in the fuel system, look for them,if there is air in the fuel system it will not pump the fuel.

Replaced leaking fuel filter, primed filter and now will not start.

IT will never go unless you bled the air out of the system. Find all the bleed screws and pump fuel out until you get solid fuel. Crack the injector line nuts and crank over until there is fuel drops appearing at each nut . retighten the nuts and then there is every possibility that the engine will start
AS an off side ---Diesels are compression ignition engines and that means that they compress the air to white hot and the fuel is then introduced into this air and ignites IF you spray anything into the air intake then this will ignite prematurely and blow the pistons back out of the sump.
Check that the electric stop solenoid is operational and diesels have to have a fast cranking speed so half flat batteries are a waste of time

1993 ford tempo will only start when I spray ether into the plenum

Your fuel system needs servicing. Does the pump come on for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to ON? It should to pressurize the system, and then shut off till engine is cranked or running. If you don't hear it buzz on , it may have failed. If it does work, it may not be working to specs, or the fuel filter may be plugged, preventing gas from reaching the engine.
If the pump is not working, check fuses first, both under dash and under hood. A mechanic would check for power to the pump and the ground for the pump, before condemning the fuel pump. The gas tank would have to be removed to replace the pump.
Good luck.

95 ford thunderbird has been sitting for about 2 yrs. engine will turnover but will not crank. suggestions

i would be inclined to empty fuel tank and put fresh petrol in and then try it again ,try starting it with a ether spray in the air intake and see if it will fire up because once engine warms up a bit it will run on the old fuel so you drive to a garage and fill it up with some fresh fuel

(TOYOTA SURF 1990 TURBO DIESEL) No diesel coming out of fuel pump

If it has glow plugs or an intake heater you will need to disable the circuit. Then you can use a small amount of ether to spray into the air cleaner.!!! If you spray too much and/or Dont disable the circuits you can damage the motor!!! When you spray the ether, if the engine starts and stalls then its not getting fuel. This could be related to the fuel pump, injection pump, the fuel system loosing its prime(fuel line leak), fuel shut-off valve or solenoid. If it doesn't start then it could be related to your timing, valves or maybe compression.
