Question about 1983 Jeep CJ5

In am replacing the wheel cylinders and brake shoes on a 1973 jeep cj5. everything went fine except the last wheel. with the adjuster all the way closed, the drum will still not fit over the shoe on the bottom half. i have the right shoes in the right position and is all together just like the remaining 3. what is the solution to my problem? thanks, dave

You can't have everything in the correct position or the drum would mount. Take a good look again. "Make sure" each part is correctly positioned and make sure the adjustment wheel is correct and that the parking brake is not engaged..

Rear drums smell like something is burning and are hot.


remove the drum and inspect you job. small shoe on front big shoe on back.brake lube on the backing plate.lose the adjuster and inspect,lube the adjuster, give more free play on your parking brake cable 3 click is the normal before lock the wheel. Inspect the master cylinder for overfeel, remove any fluid over the max level. inspect the fluid for contamination(burn smell or oily)flush the system. lift the Jeep and pump on the brakes,if the wheel is locking open the bleeder screw.if brake fluid is under pressure,replace the hoses.

Brake problem


try adjusting the rear brakes up correctly
the spring that holds the shoes together pushes all the brake fluid back into the reservoir and each application has to move the shoes back into contact with the drum
that is enough to get the pedal close to the floor

Your description sounds like the brakes are WAY out of adjustment. The brake cylinders need the shoes to hit the drum or they will do exactly what you describe. I always adjust the shoes until they lock the wheel, then back off until the wheel spins freely, usually 8 to 20 clicks.

RIGHT REAR TIRE GRABS AND LOCKS WHEN APPLYING BRAKES. I HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING IN BRAKE SYSTEM EXCEPT BRAKE BOOSTER. REAR ADJUSTERS ARE AS LOW AS THEY GO. WHEEL BEARINGS ARE FINE ANY IDEAS ?


You could have gotten the wrong drums or brake shoes. When you do the drums there should be some adjustment that you have to do to get the shoes closer to the drum. If you have removed all the slack then I would guess your shoes are wrong. You should compare them with the old ones if you still have them. It has happened to me before.

I'm replacing my rear brake shoes on my 2001 chevy venture,i've assembled new parts and what has been happening is when i push on the brake pedal the adjuster actuator and actuator spring keep popping off...


Parking brake lever on leading shoe (end of retractor spring in its hole on the leading shoe). Make sure the the adjuster screw assembly is engaged properly with the leading shoe (also, engaged with the parking brake lever). Adjuster actuator installed on the trailing shoe (also, engaged with the adjuster screw assembly). After inserting the retractor spring in its hole on the trailing shoe, insert actuator spring in its hole (just below wheel cylinder) in leading shoe and stretch across and connect it to the adjuster actuator. Adjust star wheel to get shoes close to drum. Reinstall drum (shoes close with no rub). Reinstall wheel. Push brake pedal for final adjustment. Test forward. Test Backwards. If everything is in the correct place, nothing should pop off. I hope you have a before picture. Haynes manual has good pictures. I own a 2002 Pontiac Montana, but a family member has taken it out of town. My info is from the Haynes manual. I replaced the brake shoes a couple years ago.

How do i take off the brake drums on a 2003 chevy cavalier


After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

CAUTION
Brake shoes may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid. NOTE: A brake spring removal tool and a brake adjusting gauge are required for this procedure.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely with jackstands.
  2. If the brakes have never been serviced before, the drums will be held on the wheel studs with spring nuts. Remove the spring nuts and discard.
  3. Turn the adjustment starwheel so that the brake shoes are retracted from the brake drum and remove the brake drum.
  4. Install wheel cylinder clamps to retain the wheel cylinder pistons in place and prevent leakage of brake fluid while replacing the shoes.
  5. Remove the U-clip and washer securing the adjuster cable to the parking brake lever.
  6. Remove the adjuster cable, cable guide, adjuster lever and adjuster springs. Remove the return springs with a brake spring remover tool.
  7. Remove the hold-down retainers and springs, then remove the brake shoes. To install:
  8. Clean the backing plate with a brush or cloth. Place a dab of Lubriplate® on each spot where the brake shoes rub on the backing plate. NOTE: Always replace brake linings in axle sets. Never replace linings on one side or just on one wheel.
  9. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the adjuster cable guides, adjuster screw and pivot, parking brake lever and lever pivot pin with multi-purpose grease.
  10. Apply a thin coat of multi-purpose chassis lube to the mounting pads on the backing plate.
  11. Transfer the parking brake actuating lever to the new secondary shoe.
  12. Position the brake shoes on the backing plate, then install the hold-down springs and retainers. Don't forget to engage the parking brake lever with the cable.
  13. Install the parking brake actuating bar and spring between the parking brake lever and primary shoe.
  14. Install the self-adjusting cable, cable guide and upper return springs.
  15. Thoroughly clean the starwheel and lightly lubricate the threads with lithium based grease.
  16. Install the starwheel.
  17. Install the self-adjusting cam and lower spring. A big pair of locking pliers is good for this job.
  18. Check the surface of the brake shoes for any grease that may have gotten on them. If dirty, lightly clean with a piece of sandpaper.
  19. Adjust the brakes, install the brake drum and wheel. Lower the vehicle and test drive.

Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2. Remove and discard spring nuts securing drums to wheel studs.
3. Remove brake drums.
NOTE: If drums prove difficult to remove, retract brake shoes. Remove access plug at the rear of backing plate and back off adjuster screw with
brake tool and screwdriver.
4. Remove U-clip and washer securing adjuster cable to parking brake lever.
5. Remove primary and secondary return springs from anchor pin with brake spring pliers.
6. Remove hold-down springs, retainers and pins with standard retaining spring tool.
7. Install spring clamps on wheel cylinders to hold pistons in place.
8. Remove adjuster lever, adjuster screw and spring.
9. Remove adjuster cable and cable guide.
10. Remove brake shoes and parking brake strut.
11. Disconnect cable from parking brake lever and remove lever.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean support plate with brake cleaner.
2. If new drums are being installed, remove protective coating with carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner.
3. Clean and lubricate anchor pin with light coat of Mopar multi-mileage grease.
4. Apply multi-purpose grease to brake shoe contact surfaces of support plate.
5. Lubricate adjuster screw threads and pivot with spray lube.
6. Attach parking brake lever to secondary brake shoe. Use new washer and U-clip to secure lever.
7. Remove wheel cylinder clamps.
8. Attach parking brake cable to lever.
9. Install brake shoes on support plate. Secure shoes with new hold-down springs, pins and retainers.
10. Install parking brake strut and spring.
11. Install guide plate and adjuster cable on anchor pin.
12. Install primary and secondary return springs.
13. Install adjuster cable guide on secondary shoe.
14. Lubricate and assemble adjuster screw.
15. Install adjuster screw, spring and lever and connect to adjuster cable.
16. Adjust shoes to drum.
17. Install wheel/tire assemblies and lower vehicle.
18. Verify firm brake pedal before moving vehicle.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .

  1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  2. Remove brake drum. If brake drum cannot be removed easily, insert a suitable screwdriver through hole in backing plate, then push adjuster lever away from adjuster and back of adjustment tension.
  3. Remove tension spring, using a suitable tool, then remove rear shoe hold-down spring and pin. Remove rear brake shoe and anchor spring, Fig. 7.
    1. On Land Cruiser models, remove front hold-down spring using a suitable tool, then disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake bellcrank, Fig. 7.
    2. On Pickup, 4Runner, 4WD T100 and 4WD Tacoma models, remove front shoe hold-down spring and pin, using a suitable tool, then disconnect No. 1 parking brake cable from No. 3 parking brake bellcrank.
    3. On 2WD T100 models, proceed as follows:
      1. Remove E-ring, then automatic adjusting lever and C-washer, then parking brake lever. Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder using a suitable container to catch fluid.
      2. Remove wheel cylinder. Remove following parts from wheel cylinder: two boots, two pistons, two pistons cups and spring.
    1. On models except 2WD T100, remove front brake with strut, then disconnect parking brake cable from front shoe. Remove parking brake cable No. 2.
    2. Remove adjusting lever spring, then the adjuster from front shoe.
    Inspection
    1. Measure brake drum inside diameter. Inside diameter should be 11.61 inches,
      1. Measure brake shoe lining thickness, Fig. 3. Minimum thickness should be .04 inch on models except on T100 models and .039 inch on T100 models.
      2. Inspect brake lining and drum for proper contact and replace drum or shoes as necessary.
      3. Inspect wheel cylinder for corrosion or damage.
      4. Inspect backing plate for wear or damage.
      5. Inspect bellcrank components for bending, wear or damage.
      6. Apply a suitable lubricant to backing plate contact areas.
      Installation
      1. On 2WD T100 models, proceed as follows:
        1. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to piston cups, pistons and boots.
        2. Assemble and install wheel cylinder.
        3. Connect brake line to cylinder.
      1. Apply high temperature grease to following parts:
      1. Apply a suitable lubricant to adjuster bolt threads and end.
      2. Assemble adjuster to lever, then install adjuster lever spring.
      3. On Land Cruiser models, install parking brake lever cable to parking brake shoe, then attach cable to bellcrank.
      4. On Pickup, 4Runner, 4WD T100 and 4WD Tacoma models, install No. 1 parking brake cable to parking brake lever shoe, then attach the other side of cable to No. 3 bellcrank.
      5. Position front shoe in place with end of shoe inserted into piston, then install shoe hold-down spring and pin using a suitable tool.
      6. Assemble anchor spring to front and rear shoe, then install rear shoe with end inserted in piston.
      7. Install rear shoe hold-down spring and pin, then the tension spring.
      8. If necessary, adjust bellcrank as follows:
        1. Lightly pull bellcrank in direction "A", Fig. 8, until there is no slack in part "B".
            1. Rotate adjusting bolt until dimension "C" is .016-.031 inch.
            2. Lock adjusting bolt with locknut, when connect parking brake cable to bellcrank.
            3. Install tension spring.
          1. Ensure proper parking brake travel.
          2. Pull adjusting lever cable upward, then release and ensure adjusting bolt rotates. If bolt does not rotate, check for improper installation of rear brakes.
          3. Adjust strut to shortest possible length, then install drum.
          4. Pull parking brake lever fully upward. Repeat process several times.
            1. Remove drum, then check for proper clearance, Fig. 4. Clearance should be .024 inch. If clearance is not as specified, check parking brake system.
            2. Install brake drum, then bleed and refill brake system.
            3. Install wheel and tire assembly, then lower vehicle.

FRONT ROTORS & PADS
  1. Remove caliper.
  2. Remove cap and snap ring, Fig. 10, then remove cone washers with tapered punch.
  3. Insert suitable length bolts into flange bolt holes, then tighten bolts evenly and remove flanges.
  4. Remove free wheel hub cover and snap ring, then remove nut, spring washer and cone washer with suitable tapered punch.
  5. Remove free wheel hub body and gasket.
  6. Remove locknut, lock washer and adjusting nut.
  7. Remove axle hub and brake disc as an assembly.
  8. Remove oil seal and inner bearing from hub.
  9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs., then back off nut. Torque nut to 18 ft. lbs. Using spring scale attached to hub bolt, check that preload is 1.4-12.6. Install lockwasher and locknut, if equipped. Torque locknut to 35 ft. lbs., and recheck preload. Secure lockwasher by bending one tab inward and one tab outward.
  1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove clip and hole pins, Fig. 9.
  3. Remove anti-rattle spring and shim(s) if equipped, then remove brake pads.
  4. Lubricate caliper housing with suitable brake grease at pad contact points.
  5. Reverse procedure to install.
