Question about 1996 Chevrolet K1500

To remove air from the cooling system,do I fill the reservoir to the top past the line? an should the radiator have coolant in it when I raise it and run it to past operating temp?

Yes the radiator should be full of coolant ,if it is blowing it out or excess bubbles in system then you have a head gasket problem ,this is the only fault that will cause it ,go to car sales and look around then trade it in and make sure engine is cold before they see it and give you a price ,leave rad cap slightly loose so they do not see the pressure build up also borrow a young girl with a short mini skirt on to distract the salesman this works trust me.

After I replace the tensioner elbow and refill coolant, do I need to get air out of the lines?


Yes you do have to burp the system. With radiator cap off (as opposed to the expansion tank reservoir which should also be off) the engine cold and the system almost full, squeeze the top and bottom radiator hoses sharply. Top up fully and replace the two caps. Bring the engine and water coolant to full temperature until the cooling fan kicks in. Wearing gloves, squeeze those hoses again with the engine running. You should feel the water surging. Turn off the engine and leave to cool. Remove the radiator cap and fill the system to the top. Replace the radiator cap. Remove the cap to the reservoir bottle and top that up to the MAX line. Job done and all the air pockets removed.

How do i burp the coolant system on a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cylinder


When the engine is cool open the Radiator Cap and make sure it is filled to the top with Coolant. From there locate the Coolant Reservoir and make sure it is filled to the level marked on the side of the container. Now this is where the confusion comes as "burping" the cooling system comes from decades ago and is not necessary now. When the Cooling System is properly filled the system will purge its self when it runs and shuts down. The important part is run the engine to completely make the nominal operating temperature and when it cools the Coolant will move around. This is where most people open the Radiator Cap to check which introduces more Air into the system. Do not open the Radiator but rather check the Reservoir which you should see actually lost Coolant is it gut sucked into the Radiator thus topping off the system.

Air in lines for cooling system of 95 nissan maxima


Hello Michelle, my name is Michael and I too had air in the cooling system and this is how I got it out. I had to raise the front end to where the middle of the front bumper was about 40 inches. I removed the radiator cap and immediately had ton add more coolant till it was visibly full at the radiator filler neck. Make sure the cap on the overflow reservoir is on tight. Now start the car and observe the filler neck because you will probably have to add more coolant. once it is full turn on the heater to the max position and direct it to the feet and econ. you should see a lot of bubbles coming from the radiator filler neck. That is the air being purged from the system. make sure you fill with coolant as needed. Now when the t-stat opens you'll see the coolant drop from the filler neck because it's being exchanged from the engine block do not add coolant at this point. Put the radiator cap back on and remove the screw holding the overflow reservoir and raise the reservoir above the radiator and squeeze the tube to get the air out of the tube. Once the air is out and the tube is filled with coolant put the reservoir back in place and fill with coolant to the FULL mark. Shut off the engine lower vehicle and let the engine cool down and remove the radiator cap and fill with coolant till it is visibly full and replace the radiator cap. I had to do this twice but it worked and my car is operating at normal temperature and with the same stroke took care of a few other problems. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

Air pockets in radiator


Air can be purged. While your engine is cool remove radiator and reservoir caps. Place funnel in radiator. Turn heat to the highest position and start vehicle. Add coolant to radiator as needed while vehicle warms up. You should see bubbles coming out of radiator. Fill reservoir to between cold and hot fill lines. Replace caps when bubbling stops but before coolant temperature reaches normal operating temperature. Never remove the radiator cap until engine has fully cooled down.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that small animals and domestic pets are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze and may attempt to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or from puddles on the ground. This can be fatal if ingested in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused until it becomes contaminated or several years old. To avoid injuries from scalding fluid and steam, DO NOT remove the radiator cap while the engine is running or if the engine or radiator is still hot.
  1. Before draining the cooling system, place the heater's temperature selector to the full WARM position while the engine is running.
  2. Turn the engine off before it gets hot and the system builds pressure.
  3. Make sure the engine is still cool and the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  4. Remove and drain the reservoir recovery tank.
  5. Place a fluid catch pan under the radiator. Turn the radiator draincock counterclockwise to open, then allow the coolant to drain.
  6. Remove the radiator cap by performing the following:
    1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detent.
    2. If any residual pressure is present, WAIT until the hissing stops.
    3. After the hissing noise has ceased, press down on the cap and continue rotating it counterclockwise to remove it.
  7. Allow the coolant to drain completely from the vehicle.
  8. Close the radiator draincock. NOTE: When filling the cooling system, be careful not to spill any coolant on the drive belts or alternator. To refill:
  9. Make sure the heater temperature is placed in the full hot position.
  10. Open the bleed screw on the thermostat housing.
  11. Install the reservoir recovery tank and using a 50/50 mixture of the recommended antifreeze and clean water, fill the cooling system reservoir tank to the FULL mark. WARNING
    If any coolant is spilled on a painted surface, wipe it up immediately.
  12. Begin filling the radiator with the 50/50 mixture of coolant. Watch for air being released from the open the bleed screw on the thermostat housing. Once coolant mixture begins to steadily flow through the bleeder, close the bleeder.
  13. Continue to fill the radiator until the radiator is full.
  14. Start the engine and allow the engine to run until the cooling fans operate two times, making sure to top off the system as the fluid level drops.
  15. After the cooling fan has run for the second time, top off the system as necessary, then install the radiator cap.
  16. Allow the engine to run and inspect the cooling system for leaks.

I have a 2001 mercury villager that overheats. I replaced the fan assembly and the thermostat. The radiator is fine. What else could be causing the van to overheat?


You have air trapped in the system. If you have cold air, warm air, cold air from your heater, then it's air entrapment. Very common these days. Go to a shop that uses vacuum method to refill cooling system & that will purge air.
Otherwise, you can try. Park uphill. cold engine - fill radiator to top with 50/50 mix of antifreeze. leave cap on but loose. fill reservior to 3/4 full. Turn heater to hot to allow coolant to flow through heater core. start engine, run at 1500 rpms until thermostat opens and upper hose is hot. tighten cap and let it cool down. after cool check level of reservoir. fill to top line on reservoir. it should **** coolant back into radiator as it cools down.
repeat if still an issue.

Trapped air in the cooling system must be removed. A pressurized radiator coolant recovery reservoir system is used which continuously separates the air from the cooling system.
  • When the water thermostat is open, coolant flows through the small hose from the top of the radiator outlet tank to the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
  • The radiator coolant recovery reservoir separates any trapped air from the coolant and replenishes the system through its radiator coolant recovery hose to the water thermostat housing.
  • The radiator coolant recovery reservoir serves as the location for:
    • service fill
    • coolant expansion during warm-up
    • system pressurization from the pressure relief cap and
    • air separation during operation
  • The radiator coolant recovery reservoir is designed to have approximately 0.5-1 liter (0.53-1.06 quarts) of air when cold to allow for coolant expansion.

sounds like hoses going to heater core but they are rubber usually. But it could be the hoses for the degs bottle mounted on the passenger side inner fender.

I Suspect that you have AIR in your COOLING SYSTEM Fallow Procedures BELOW to Insure there is NO AIR IN COOLING SYSTEM


Draining and Filling Cooling System

Draining Procedure

Important: Do NOT add any engine coolant supplement sealant pellets to the cooling system. Drain and refill the engine cooling system every 5 years or 240,000 km, (150,000 mi) , whichever occurs first.

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Remove and clean the coolant recovery reservoir.
Caution: Refer to Radiator Cap Removal Caution in Service Precautions.

  1. Remove the radiator cap when the engine is cool:
3.1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detention tab. Do not press down while rotating pressure cap. 3.2. Wait until any residual pressure, indicated by a hissing sound, is relieved. 3.3. After all hissing stops, press down on the radiator cap and rotate the cap counterclockwise in order to remove the cap.
Important: Recover and store used coolant in a used coolant holding tank and submit the used coolant for recycling on a regular basis. Do NOT pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is very toxic. Disposing of ethylene glycol into the sewer system or ground water is both illegal and ecologically unsound.

  1. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain valve in order to collect all of the used coolant.
  2. Open the radiator drain valve located at the bottom of the radiator tank. If only partial cooling system draining is required, drain enough coolant to perform the procedure.
  3. Open the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing 2 full turns
    1. Open the air bleed valve above coolant pump 2 full turns.
    2. Place a drain pan under the engine block drains in order to collect the used coolant.Important: Allow the coolant to drain completely.

      1. Remove both of the engine block drains.
        • The front left engine block drain is located between the starter motor and the engine oil filter.
        • The rear right engine block drain is located near the crankshaft position sensor.
      Filling Procedure
      Reinstall the engine block drains
    3. Close the radiator drain valve,
      1. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50,000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.
      2. Slowly add a 50/50 mixture of GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL and clean, drinkable water to the radiator until the coolant level is at the base of the radiator fill neck.
      3. Wait for 2 minutes and reinspect the level of the coolant in the radiator. If necessary, add coolant to the radiator until the coolant level is at the base of the radiator fill neck.
      4. Install the radiator cap.Ensure that the radiator cap arrow points toward the radiator overflow tubeImportant: The air bleed valves are brass. Do NOT over-tighten the air bleed valves.

        1. Close the air bleed valve above the coolant pump.
          1. Close the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing.
          2. Fill the coolant reservoir with a 50/50 mixture of GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL and clean, drinkable water. Caution: Refer to Radiator Cap Removal Caution in Service Precautions. Important: If the coolant temperature indicator turns ON, turn the engine OFF immediately and allow the engine to cool. Do NOT remove the radiator cap.
          3. Start the engine and allow the engine cooling fan to cycle on and off 3 times. If the low coolant indicator does not turn OFF and the coolant level is above the Full Cold mark on the coolant recovery reservoir, refer to Engine Coolant Temperature Gage Inaccurate or Inoperative.
          4. Turn off the ignition.
          5. Allow the engine to cool.
          6. Ensure that the engine coolant concentration is sufficient.
