Its normal for an old car where their is plenty of wear with age ,a can of STP oil treatment will help but its nothing to worry about .

When oil is cold, pressure will read high, but as it warms up pressure indicator should drop to normal. Are you using the correct weight oil for your weather conditions? Running straight 30 weight, or say 20w50 could cause this issue.

Well it could be the sending unit for the gauge.
But odds are the oil pump or engine bearings are worn out.
As the engine warms up, the metal spaces expand and the oil gets thinner. The oil pressure drops some under normal conditions, but not more than 10 or 15psi. Normal idle pressure with the engine warmed up is probably 25psi.
You could check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to make sure its not the sending unit.
Once the oil pressure starts staying below 20psi for long periods you'll start hearing noises.

Normal is 10w30.
If the oil pressure gauge is correct, my guess would be worn engine bearings and / or oil pump.

I have a 2001 chevy s-10 showing oil pressure at start up near the max limit (70-75) and drop to about the midway mark of the gauge at idle after warm up. Is this normal or do I have a problem? If so,...

hi.

this actually sounds quite normal.
when the oil is cold, it is thicker, and has a higher pressure.
when it warms up, it thins out, and has a lower pressure.

it is also quite normal for the guage to waver a little, going up and down 5-10 psi with the engine speed.

the only time to worry is if you get a sudden drop in pressure when driving.

2001 camaro 3800 eng. when eng is cold oil pressure is high after warms up oil pressure drop very low at idle. why??

When the engine and oil are cold it will show a high pressure because of the viscosity of the oil. When it warms up the oil is thinner. If it doesn't drop below 20-25 psi at warm idle I wouldn't worry about it as that is normal.

could be a worn oil pump or pump pressure relieve valve try finding a product called lucas oil stabiliers and use a full bottle with your next oil change should help bring the pressure back up and it will help you engine plenty

Low oil when engine warms up gmc sierra 1995

30-40 psi of oil pressure is fine for many vehicles including your GMC. I am assuming that the truck has more than 100,000 miles on it and still has the original engine in it. By rule of thumb you only need 10 psi per 1000 rpms in a typical street driven engine to give adequate oil pressure to keep the bearings from oil starvation. The oil pressure is typically higher when initial start up occurs because it is more viscous due to the temperature of the oil as the engines oil warms up the visconsity thins out and the oil flows more smoothly. The drop in oil pressure is a normal occurance. Above 45 is more than required for a daily driven street engine. I believe that the specs on that engine only list 30- 45 psi.
