Subaru Forester P0303, Cylinder 3 misfire problem

I have a 1999 Subaru Forester. Yesterday the check engine light started blinking. ODB II says it's a P0303, Cylinder 3 misfire. I replaced the plugs first. Did not solve the problem. Next I replaced the cables. When I removed the cable 3 from the coil is was black and obviously burnt - and carbon powder fell out of the cable connector. I used steel wool to clean the coil terminal, and as I said I replaced the cables. Still have the problem. Looks like I need to replace the coil. But it's bunch of cash (relatively speaking). Is the coil electronic or mechanical? Does it seem that this is the right thing to do, and / or are there other things I should check before replacing the coil?

How do I check to see if it's putting out power (vs. burnt out)? If feed was bad, wouldn't ALL cylinders be misfiring?

Having the same problem with my 2000 Legacy Outback. A mechanic friend of me said there is a limited number of things this could be (in order of likelyhood): plugs, plugwires, coil, fuel injector, bad compression/valve. He said he has 2 Subarus in his shop with a rough idle and bad gas mileage and both needed new coil packs. The coil packs in Subarus has 2 coils, one for the 1 and 3 and one for the 2 and 4. Each one of those coils has two coil wraps in each. These are wear parts and eventually they wear out. He said in Subaru they usually last 90,000-150,000 miles. So all things considered, he said it is 99 times out of 100 the coil pack. I would shop it around they seem to vary in price wildly from store to store. I found one for my car for $126 while another store had it for $200.

P1763 and p0303 codes for my 02 jeep grand cherokee. car is super sluggish and shakes when gets to 50mph.

no engine stated.??????????
303 is gross misfire on #3 cylinder. on all cars.
its a for sure thing, means bad combustion on #3 and its power is weak. 1763 is tranny The 7 means that. and is problem2.

ever get a 60k miles tunup this decade?
sparks plugs, spark wires, filters, air and fuel>?
spark plugs dont last life of any engine.
THE CEL blinking (oper guide tells) means that misfire
is burning the CAT converter to a crisp. (raw fuel + air does that)
the opr. guide says get it serviced, fast, dont drive fast or tow anything. all great advice in the glove box.

get a cheap tuneup, and magic can happen in most cases.
misfire has many causes. over 20.
but a tuneup not done, is 99% cause. (due to nobody doing them)
only fate , determines truth, not statistics....
for example you sucked a valve on #3..

if the new spark parts dont fix #3 a compression tests is next.
or an injector balance test say from #3 to one other injector.
all this is like 1hr work, but no engine stated, so.....

P0303 mean Cylinder 3 Misfire.

Consider replacing the Cylinder 3 Spark Plug. If that does not settle it,replace the wires too.

Good luck.

You MUST read the fault codes to discover what cylinder is misfiring. Why not buy a cheap fault code reader. Here is one such reader. New OBD2 II EOBD Car Diagnostic Code Reader Live Data

1.Plugs
2. Vacuum leak
3. Injector fault
4. High or low fuel pressure.
Thats the list of things to check.
This is a #3 cylinder misfire.
There is also TSB about #3 injector needing added heat protection. This could definitely be the cause. I start at plugs and go from there.
Hope this helps.
Thank you,

1999 Chevrolet Suburban cylinder 3 misfiring?

P0300 is a multiple cylinder misfire and is used by all OBD2 vehicles on the road in the USA that is 1996 and newer, P0301 is cylinder number 1..P0302 is # 2 and so on...that tune up may have been needed and parts and labor are expensive..you have a cylinder that is misfiring and the cause must be located..possible causes are intake manifold air leaks..secondary ignition problems..fuel injectors..plugged EGR system if it has one..failed head gasket..burned or cracked valves..I have seen some crazy stuff..you need a tech on that one not a mechanic.

I have a ODB II code reader giving p1763, p1762, p0303

Your right about the two codes. It's really a transmission part.
As soon as you open up the transmission pan, it right there.
f0d99d5.jpg But, I would leave this up to a transmission place. It may need a special type of calibration tool for the new sensor.

As for PO303, that is a missfire in cylinder #3

I hope I answered your question.
