That vintage you can use any standard transmission fluid or straight power steering fluid. The power steering system is not fussy, it just like to have fluid in it.
Most BMWs have a dip stick in the reservoir cap to measure the fluid level of the power steering fluid. We use Agip power steering fluid. There are generally just two types, standard Dextrn/ATF and Power steering fluid. Unless the cap or manual states otherwise, then just put power steering fluid in it.
Power Steering Fluid
Power steering pumps are ordinarily lubricated with power steering fluid. Use the correct type for the vehicle. Check the owner's manual if you are unsure.
Usually it's a belt driven power steering fluid pump that has hoses that lead to the rack and pinion steering.
Unscrew the cap and add power steering fluid to it there.
Power steering fluid - Dexron 2 or 3 automatic transmission fluid. Yes transmission fluid. And while you are at it check the fluid level in the transmission.
Since you got the hood up, check the brake fluid, wiper fluid, radiator fluid, battery fluid, oil level.
