Getting the brake light off to change light bulb

Most brake light bulbs are accessed from trunk interior. open trunk and look for removeable panels that might have 'click' catches. These panels will be adjacent to the bulb location. Once bulb socket is exposed, find the appropriate bulb and twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and bulb socket should pull free out to expose bare bulb. Bulb should also either pull straight from socket or twist 1/4 turn and pull free from socket. Replacement is simply the reverse,

My brake light is out on the drivers side of my 1999 Toyota Celica GT. My husband cannot seem to get his hands on the bulb for extraction. What is he doing wrong? He is coming from the trunk door opening...

I think you should see screws inside the trunk and on the back of your tail light then unscrew them and you'll be able to get the whole tail light out and then you can take the bulb out by turning the bulb cover. Good luck

Open trunk. look for plastic access panels near where your brake lights are(inside trunk). Remove the panels. Turn bulb housing counterclockwise until you can remove the housing from the lens unit. Push in bulb and turn a little bit counterclockwise until it will come out of the socket. Read the number on the bulb. Replace with same number bulb. Installation is the reverse of removal.

  1. Step 1 Determine how the bulb is accessed: On some models the lens (the red or white plastic part over the light) must be unscrewed from the outside, and on others the bulb is accessible only from inside the trunk. If there are no screws on the lens, you can assume that the bulb must be replaced from inside. Usually there will be a plastic cover that must be removed in order to access the bulb.
