Question about 2003 Kia Sedona

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Kia sedona van. After sitting for only four days, it won't start. It acts like a fuel problem. It tries to start but it acts like it's not getting any fuel. Just to the front on the fuel tank are the main lines for gas and they lead to a "box". There is a small cylinder that clicks when I turn the key, but I don't hear a fuel pump running. Any ideas?

It possibkle that you have in the 2004 Kia Sedona 3.5L MFI DOHC 6cyl any wrong with the Fuel FIlter clogged (the fuel filter is located inside the fuel tank and is replaced with the fuel pump as an assembly).

The Idle Speed and Mixture Adjustments is maintained by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is necessary or possible. Also its possible that you need relieving Fuel System Pressure:

  1. Remove the rear seat.
  2. Remove the access cover
  3. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  4. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  6. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  7. Restore the electrical connections after fuel system repairs are completed.
Hope helps.

Thank you for replying so fast!

Ok, I have four rear seats, I can find no access panel under any of them, even if I could disconnect the fuel pump, the van won't start at all. Should I hear the fuel pump "whirring" when I turn the ignition to on? Is there any way other than removing the tank and sending unit to find out if this is the problem?

The fuel seding units are inside the tank, with the fuel pump body; keep in mind check the fuel cut off switch (I dont know if your model have it) and the fuses in the fuse panel. For specifi location and description consult your Owners Manual.

Ok...I've check all fuses and they are all good. I dropped the tank and removed the whole assembly. After turning over the key I heard no pump running. I'm pretty sure that's it. I've done alot of research on this so far and the general thought is that Kia's are notorious for this problem. So, my last question for you is, how do you remove the fuel lines from the fuel pump? The connector turns but I don't know how to release it. Thank you for your help. Oh, I did find the access panel, very helpful.

Check this LINK for details about fuel pump and filter (included fuel lines), and, also can review this generic details for fuel line removal and replacement:

    1. Determine type of fuel line to be replaced. Rubber hoses will
have clamps on both ends that should be loosened with screw driver.
Nylon and steel lines will have a ferrule at both ends removed and
replaced using proper size line wrench

    2. Using proper size line wrench or screwdriver, loosen fittings
by turning counter clockwise. Catch fuel remaining in lines in a
      gasoline safe container.

    3. Remove defective fuel line and install the new line or hose
opposite of removing. Take care not to strip or cross-thread fittings as
      this will cause leaks.

    4. Dispose of remaining fuel in an OSHA safe container.

    Hope helps.

My Kia Sedona van will quit while running unless it sits overnight, then it will fire right up until it is shut off again and then it will not start??? any ideas??

Its probably a fuel problem i would start with the fuel filter thats the easiest part to rule out first. The best thing to do is hook up a fuel pressure gage to the check valve on your fuel rail to see if you are loseing fuel pressure. If you can not do that you can just start with the fuel filter see if that solves your problem.

How do i change the belts on a 2004 kia sedona van

There is a tensioner pulley for each belt, you loosen the nut on the front of the pulley, then there is a tensioner bolt that you loosen, that will move the pulley away from belt to remove the belt. You'll need to get to them from the passenger side under the car. You'll need to remove the plastic covers to get them.

'03 Kia Sedona EX - ONLY Error Code - Clogged Catalytic Converter - Causing hesitation and 3 mpg reduction in gas mileage. Van in very good condition, 78,000 miles, 1 yr of 500 Miles/wk of Commuting...

Most "common" cause is and engine misfire that causes unburned fuel to enter the converter and overheat/melt the catalyst. The converter is covered by 8yr/80,000 mile warranty for defects, and may be covered thru Kia. On a positive note we have a 2005 sedona shuttle van a work with 250,000 miles on it and qoing strong.
