Timing chain wearing out

My RX has 67,000 miles and the dealer tells me the timing chain is wearing out. It seems odd this would occur with low mileage.

What kind of damage to an engine/transmission occurs when my motorcycle was ridden for ten miles with low oil (oil on dipstick barely reached bottom of stick)


If there was still oil visible on the dipstick, and if you weren't seeing any low oil or engine overheat lights, you're probably OK. A high RPM engine without sufficient oil can get hot really fast. The low marks on the dipsticks are intentionally well above the 'damage happening now' points so that people don't wait too long. if you were redlining it on the way home, the odds of something getting riled up go up a bit, but 10 miles isn't too much of a schlep. You did the right thing topping the oil off. Make sure that you're telling the dealer exactly what you told us, and tell them that they need to take a look at the bike on their dime since they were the ones that messed up and only added half the oil. That should be no problem for a reputable dealer.

If you're wanting to keep things on your own watch, drive it gently for upcoming miles, and you can consider swapping the oil and filter if you're paranoid about any cruft getting burned/caked from a low oil situation. It's maybe $20-30 bucks of fairly cheap insurance.

if your loosing compression it could be dirty valve guides or valves. could also be poor rings or a loose timing chain. have the compression checked when its happening.

Do i need to replace y timing chain at 100K miles on my 2007 RX 350?


No, timing chains can outlast the life of the car. Only a problem if it starts making noise from getting too much slack, or jumping timing.
But that will probably be after the next 100,000, or more.

Normally Timing Chains do not wear out or break like the old Timing Belts did. The main issue with Timing Chains is that the actualy chain guides will wear out usually before anything happens with the actual chain itself.

If you are not hearing any abnormal noises from the Timing Chain area, i would probably just leave it alone, you could also call the dealer and just ask them what the recommended service interval (if any) is to replace the Timing Chain.

On a dashbord flashing "oil


STOP the engine immediately !!! There is an oil pump failure of 2.0 TDI engines !
Remove the oil pan and the oil pump & balancer shafts assembly.

Many 2.0 TDI engines show excess chain noise and wear anywhere from 50,000-100,000+ miles. Cars have broken the chains/tensioner as low as 65,000 miles. This is just a range of cars that have been reported, diagnosed, and repaired. The actual statistics on dealer repairs or failures is unknown and I've heard cars over 100,000 miles that, in my opinion as a non mechanic (most mechanics wouldn't recognize this sound and problem either), aren't noisy. From what has been reported, noticeable noise/chain-tensioner wear/greater risk of breaking is around 60,000-150,000 miles. Your case may vary. The most obvious symptom is a rattling loose noise from the oil pan. Unless you listen to a Passat TDI with a tight chain and one with a loose chain, it's hard to describe the difference other than rattling chain noise.
The reason the gear drive oil pump modification was started is because a few mechanics who specialize in TDI have seen many worn oil pump chains/sprockets/tensioners. There will always be a few defective parts that come off the assembly line and all mechanical components like chains wear out sooner or later, but in my opinion, the failure rate is abnormal considering the number of Passat TDI sold versus the number of reported oil pump failures. This does not necessarily mean that every or even most Passat TDI will have this problem, just that the reported failure rate is high enough to consider this part a design failure. Nobody, not even VW-Audi knows the average time between failure for these parts and the percentage of cars that will have this problem, but they changed this design and if you want to not have this specific failure, the only sure way is to swap to the geared module.

Timing chain on 2009 Saturn Outlook replaced 3 times in a 2 month period. What is the root cause of the problem or what should I be looking for since the dealer can't seem to figure it out.


t-chain stretch. whoever repl the chains may have overlooked a endplay issue with the camshafts. oil level and condition is critical on these engines. dont let the oil level get low and stick to a 3000 mile change interval.

How often (Mileage) do I change timing belt on


chains are not like belts.... they are much tougher therefore last a hell of a lot longer...typically around 90,000 miles or more they should be looked at as they do eventually stretch and can jump time...they also have tensioners that can wear out causing the chain to jump a tooth, and a tell tale sign of this wear is indicated by noise coming from the timing chain case area.I have seen some 3.8 v/6 engines one in particular manufactured by Buick/Olds and installed in early CJ 5 Jeeps lasting over 200,000 miles...but sounding like a washing machine at idle from all the worn parts as well as some having a fiber type cam sprocket that wears out(used to help silence any gear slap noise)Hope this somewhat helps.

Timing Chain Broke on CX-7 2007


The timing chain should of been changed at 30,000 or 60,000 miles it's in the owwners manual.

It should be in your owners manual service intervals information,or i go by the 60k miles rule.Some cars now utilize a timing chain and gears like the Mazda 3,so it would be a good idea to call your local Ford dealer,and talk to the service department,as they can tell you the specifics as to whether your engine carries a belt or chain,and the service interval for timing belts.Timing chains generally don't wear out until around the 100k mark,but belts should be serviced at 60k miles as a general rule.
