The pressure regulator in the trans is shot. Just drop the trans pan and change it. It's around 75 bucks

No reverse second is drive and Reverse is Neutral,

Check your transmission fluid, and if that is good you may have damaged the transmission in a fashion that it may need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Why will it not go into reverse

It is possible that the shift linkage has slipped or come apart but that is rather unlikely. It is more likely that the transmission has a failed internal clutch or maybe a clogged fluid path. Check to make sure the fluid level is correct and tat the fluid doesn't have a "burnt" smell. If it does then the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

I have a 91 honda accord with an automatic trans. & when i shift into reverse it refuses to engage & makes a high pitch gear slipping grinding sound ! NOT GOOD ! ,I just replaced the transmission con

Definitely not good. The transmission is slipping internally due to worn gears and clutch packs. It will have to come out for rebuilding, IMO. Have a transmission shop check it out.
Good luck.

Just bought the car yesterday after having it checked out by a local reputable mechanic. Driving it home, the clutch starting smelling and the car will not drive except in reverse. Manual...

Sounds like a problem internally in the transmission, I am assuming you can shift it to the other gears. If it is moving in reverse then you should still have some clutch left. I would check the fluid for the transmission to see if it was empty. The clutch doesn't care about what gear you are in. If reverse it strong without slipping then I say it is an internal transmission problem.

Car drives fine in first gear but slips completely in 2 3 & 4th

Auto matic or standard ????If standard, the clutch is shot, if automatic the clutches are slipping may be low on transmission fluid, check first.
