Hi.

Check the wiring to the igniter on driver side.If the wiring is OK, then the igniter may be faulty.

See this disagnostic page from Ross.

  • pammyreet1 May 31, 2010

where is the driver side igniter. do you mean to say airbag module ?

    Hi.

The airbag ignitor is located on the steering column inflation system, at the back side of the airbag.

    See complete troubleshooting here.

Disconnect the battery before performing any operation on the airbag. Repairs on airbag are quite delicate. For safety reasons the job must be performed or supervised by a trained mechanic.

just now talked to mechanic he said he connected airbag module of another car and light went . can i reset or reprogram or repair airbag module.

  • pammyreet1 May 31, 2010

You can reset the light doing a scan with a Vag-Con tool like this.

  • Ginko
    Ginko May 31, 2010

As said you reset the light doing a scan with a Vag-Con tool like this.

The price for a complete kit starts at about $600. If you do not have the tool you will need to do it at a VW/Skoda garage.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jun 01, 2010

    Hi.

You reset the light using a VagCom. You simply perform a scan on air bag module.

If you do not know how what a Vag Com is, and what the airbag igniter was, it may be better going to a qualified garage. The Air bag is a safety defice. You are not replacing an air filter.

I think I have said it all. I hope you will take my advice wisely. Sorry about the negative feedback received.

    Goodbye.

    Ginko.

There is no way to reprogram an airbag module. The reason its not turning off is you have contact issue within the driver airbag module. If you are a smoker alot of times the ash will destroy the contacts within the unit. If the code points to the steering wheel airbag then most likley the clockspring will need to be replaced.. This is the part that allows the steering wheel to turn but still be connected electrically.

    are you there ?

  • Susan Price May 31, 2010

what you need is the code. then you will need the manufacturer diagnostic procedure. Go to mitchell1diy online or alldata.com and for a small subscription you can get the repair procedures and wiring diagrams

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

i tried alldata.com but my car brand is not there ( skoda )

  • Susan Price Jun 01, 2010

still if you want to proceed your going to have to get the code for us to know what direction to proceed in

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

code is 00588 . 9 airbag igniter driver side n95 short circuit to earth

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

    00588 code

  • Susan Price Jun 01, 2010

If you have a airbag on the driver door this is what the code is referring too. The code stated that you havea wire that is touching metal somewhere between the airbag and th module. Unplug any airbad in question to see if the same code comes up after you clear it. If it does your problem is either a shorted wire or a failed airbag computer. If the code goe away then the problem is in the airbag itself. Test the airbag for resistance. If the airbag has 0 resistance then its shorted internally. If it infinity then its open. Both these reading indicate a airbag issue. It should have some resistance. somewhere between 20 and 120 ohms. Use caution while testing or it can deploy. Do a search on how to test a airbag before you proceed.

Cannot reprogram
you must diagnose and repair the short
what year is your Golf and from what part of the world are you located?

Most of he time the suspect is the clock spring (called a spiral spring on the VW), behind the air bag...

looks a lot like this...
how to reprogram airbag module - fab8f36.jpg
let me know if there is anything else I can do to help

Cheers

actually this ring was broken when steering wheel was done some work. after that i replaced with 2 new rings but light goes and come again. error come driver side igniter short curcuit to earth.

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf May 31, 2010

well that information would have been nice to know upfront!

therefore... since you have already replaced the air bag and the clock spring the ONLY thing left is the wires from the clock spring to the air bag computer

you now only have two choices
replace the entire under dash harness
    or find the "short"

to find the short you have to start at the most logically source, the column and start tearing the harness apart until you find the short

it is now appears obvious that the vehicle was in an accident, the short could be anywhere including under the drivers seat at the crash sensor!!!

  • pammyreet1 May 31, 2010

the mechanis says there is problem with airbag module . he replaced with other one of same kind and light went off > now how do i erase any fault if stored in module or how do i reset it.

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

with the exception of myself or another technician actually coming to your house to visually inspect the circuit to find the "short" there is not much I can do, or anyone I suspect

However, here is one last trick
    it requires some skill
and you risk deploying your air bag

basically what you do is run an entire new circuit from the clock spring to the air bag module

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

there is some fault in airbag module ( elctronic circuit board is inside module) . i think some errors are store inside it and has to be cleared . do you have any idea how to reset or reprogram airbag module. part no is 1c0909 615

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

if the technician replaced the bag and the light is off he should have also cleared any codes

from your first post it sounded like your light was on and you had a code

    is this not true?

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

yes there is still code ( driver side igniter n95 short circuit to earth) . when we try to earse fault using vag the code keeps on coming. mechanic checked all wiring till airbag module and it was ok . at last he removed airbag module from some other car and replaced it . after replacing light went and every thing was ok. now i need to buy a new airbag module or can it be reprogramed ?

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

if replacing the air bag with an known good bag and the light and code are resolved then your ONLY recourse here is to buy a new bag

    Sean

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

not airbag . i am talking of circuit board where wires of airbag is connected. its electronic pcb with components onit.

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

wait a second... I need to print our entire conversation because when I reply I only see your original post

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

alright... I think I see clearly now
there is a little confusion with terminology that threw me off

Often, the air bag is called an air bag "module"

the "module" you are referring to, and correct me if I'm wrong AGAIN, is what VW calls an ACM (Air bag Control Module) what what almost all the other manufactures call an RCM (Restraint Control Module)

Is this picture what we are talking about?

if so... and replacing it with a known good one resolved your concern then replacing it with a new one is the way to go

    as for programming...
yes they can be reprogrammed but NOT to resolve a code
a code has set because it sees a HARD fault
appears your fault is internal to the ACM

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

yes . air bag control unit is faulty. when repairing steering of my car the mechanic broked and the connector ring and after that this fault came .

  • pammyreet1 Jun 01, 2010

do you have idea how to reprogram this air bag control unit

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

to program you will need a VW scan tool, the latest update from VW, the ACM serial number and the hexi-decimal numbers stored inside the ACM

again... all accessible @ the VW dealer

However, given the year of your vehicle I do not think that VW will support the programming

therefore the only course of action will to be replace the ACM with a factory unit that has already been programmed

    Sean

  • Sean Reisdorf
    Sean Reisdorf Jun 01, 2010

you are better than I because I do not have that scanner
I only have an $8000 snap-on modis and cannot reprogram a VW ACM

Airbag fault light staying on octavia 4 years old

check under drivers seat for a yellow plug with ignition off unclip the plug and make sure the contacts are clean put plug back together again check to see if light goes out, if it doesn't slide back the rubber boot between the drivers door and the car body could be a broken wire from the airbag door sensor (usually a brown wire and a yellow wire if i remember correctly) if broken solder back together and insulate, (you could try for the door wire first probably easier)

How to reset dash warning lights?

Try unplugging the cable to the positive terminal on your battery for about 30 seconds and reconnect. should reset your computers codes and clear the lights. the only problem with that is, unless you fixed the problem which first caused the light to come on, its just gonna come back on again.
