Check engine light

1999 Protege check engine light is on - seems to be a very common problem

what is the best starting point and sequence of repair to correct the problem and minimize the cost of repair. What should I check and clean FIRST before replacing more expensive parts. Atr there parts that can be CLEANED with out replacement? ........ I don't have the money to just start replacing parts and hope the CEL goes off.

What is the code, you need to have a scanner hooked up to read it. That is your first step. (Some auto parts stores will read these for free, but will not give you a lot of information.)

My 2001 Mazda Protege does not shift into third gear. The check engine and battery light is on. I've had the transmission fluid checked, a tune up and an alternator put in. What should I do?

In every case where the check engine light is on there should be a code read and/or the use of diagnostic equipment to locate the fault, repairs carried out as required and then the code cleared from the memory.

It is probable other things will start working normally when the problem causing the engine check light to illuminate has been rectified but whether this is true or not that must be your starting point.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If the timing belt was broke Jerry, you would probably get a backfire. But, check it anyway. You should be able to see it by removing the front protective cover. You could have a bad distributor or coil pack. Check your wires and the dist.cap, if you have one. You could have a bad cam sensor or crank sensor. None the less, you need to test what you can and see if you can't find anything that is not getting power. It may even be the computer but check it last. They are not likely to go out but they do. Check the parts above and see if you see damaged wires or find wires with no power. Test what you can. If you have a check engine light on, get the computer scanned. It should show some error codes. This would help point you in the right direction. If you have any questions Jerry, let me know.

What should someone do if they replaced the timing belt on 1999 acura integera LS without first aligning the number one piston Now the the timing is inncorrect , are there bent valves what is the best...

The engine is what is called an "interference engine" which means if the timing belt brakes while the engine is running the valves that are fully open will be hit by the pistons. If your engine was assembled with the cam timing slightly off your valves may be ok. The best advice I can think of is to re-time the engine following the correct sequence for the timing belt replacement and then perform a compression check on the engine. If the compression test fails you probably have some bent valves. removing the head and repairing the damage is the only thing left to do.

Have your altenator checked. If your battery isn't being charged up enough from a faulty altenator the low voltage will make your car go CRAZY!
Best thing to do is buy a Haynes or Clinton's repair shop manual at your local AP store for your particular vehicle. Then read up on it in the trouble shooting section or the step by step RR section. You can purchase these at your local Auto Parts store or buy them on line at ebay burdfrenzy

It could be a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It sounds like when it is cold, your computer is interpreting your signal from the ECT (or lack therof) as being at a certain temperature and not providing the right amount of fuel in order to start the engine when it is cold. Does the check engine light blink or flash at all?

you *need* to stop driving the car and have the onboard diagnostic computer scanned. The cheapest way to do this is to go to an autozone - they will give you a module to plug into your car, then bring it back to the store and they will give you a printout.

When the CEL is flashing, it generally means something catastrophic has occurred or will occur shortly.
