How to diagnois problem with no scanner

Eliminate the battery as the issue first up.
Check if you can jump start the car from another vehicle with its engine running or at least have the starter motor kick over the engine. If it starts then you know your battery is the issue. Having lights does not mean the battery has enough cold cranking amps to turn over the starter motor.

2. If the starter cranks the engine over as normal with a jump start from another car but your engine does not start you have also eliminated the starter motor as the issue.

3. If it does not start and the starter motor will not crank the engine over either when you jump start from another vehicle, then there may well be a problem with the starter solenoid, the starter motor itself or with the wiring to the starter solenoid or to the starter motor. No power getting to the starter motor solenoid or to the starter motor and obviously the starter motor will not turn over.

4. So I need not write much more here, there is a very good guide to solving starting issues here which I suggest you might like to read.

Motor brushes appear to be bad. How do I replace?

IF it is a capacitor start it will not have brushes but a start or a start run capacitor. If it has a start capacitor the in the back of the motor there will be a governor operated switch that you would hear click as the motor starts to run. If it is a start /run capacitor the it is in the circuit all the time . Pull the capacitor out and check it externally and you will probably find that it has exploded and there is gunk leaking out of the case . Go to a motor rewinding place and they will have the correct capacitor for the motor.. Take it as a sample.

Clicking noise when no start

your start motor is not rotating, means battery is empty or your start motor bendix is broken and cant rotate your motor then. Let somebody start your car and hit with a hammer on the startmotor, when bendix comes out and car start you need to replace bendix.

Vehicle not starting

hi..

this may be because of following reasons
1.battery power is low recharge it and try starting.
2.the supply going to the starting motor is chopped off so no power is going to the motor for starting.
3.the terminal to which these motors are connected may be damaged.(motor terminal)
4.the junction box/relay to which the motor is connected may be damaged.
5.the fuse may be blown out for the motor
6.the starting motor may be damaged so that starting motor doesnt turn

these may be the reasons for not starting.

2001 volvo v70 will not start , put key in ignition but makes only small scratching noise

if all other functions are working this sounds like the start motor is defective. if the motor is worn it may turn slowly but too showly for the drive head to jump out and engage the engine flywheel.
to test your battery is ok try starting the car with the headlights on if the battery is weak the lights will dim a lot or go out and will not have enough power to start the car. if all seems fine then suspect the starter motor.
as one final test push start your car if it starts ok then this will indicate that most likely the starter motor has failed.

after starting your car and your battery is ok, switch off and try to start normally, if the car starts this time it indicated that the starter motor was stuck, this could be an indication that it will need replacement soon.
