Backfiring can be caused if the timing has changed.
Judging from the age of your truck, it's quite possible that the timing gears have slipped. This will throw the timing of the spark off even if you set the timing according to the marks. The way to tell is to remove the #1 spark plug and crank the engine over in taps... until you get it up on compression in the #1 cylinder...you can tell if you put your finger over the spark plug hole as you tap it thru..
Then check the timing marks...if the marks aren't near the proper lcoation, it's probably the timing gear/chain...
This is a common occurence when after tuning up an older motor... the timing gets adjusted, and it's running good for a bit, then the timing gears jump and it'll backfire, spit, cough and make life miserable...

2004 Kia Sedona 3.5 back fire badly some time and lock power

When a gas engine back fires and at times loses power at times just before back-firing it can sometimes suggest that the fuel tank's overflow tube, which is also responsible for allowing air to replace the fuel as it burns, otherwise, there would be tremendous suction by the time the tank was emptied. If you are losing power just before producing a back-fire event, the suggestion is, once the fuel reaches a certain level of suction, the engine dies because the suction is preventing the fuel from advancing, then, when the engine finally back-fires, it is because a blast of fuel was just pushed into the engine while it was coasting because of the shortage of air. If there is something you still don't understand, please respond accordingly.

Ford f150 1986

The firing order for the 4.9 L engine is 1-5-3-6-2-4, with the firing order rotation on the distributor cap going clockwise. For the 5.0 & 7.5 L engines, the order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, and the 5.8 L engine is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. On all three of these engines, the distributor cap firing rotation is counterclockwise. Also, on the six cylinder 4.9 L engine, the cylinders are in a "straight six", with #1 cylinder starting in front, and going in order straight back to #6. The eight cylinder engines' cylinders all fire in order also, (standing in front of the vehicle looking back towards the firewall) with #1 being front on your left and going straight back to #4, and then #5 being at front right, going straight back to #8, with the distributor being front and center. Hope this helps you out.
