Question about 1991 Cadillac Fleetwood

2 Answers

1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Coupe has the usual climate control box in the dash but when I press the ECON vent button from the off position the blower does come on but it blows air out from the defrost windshield vents and the floor vents simultaneously BUT if I drive over a good "bump" in the road (like train tracks) then the dash vents will activate properly and the air flow is only from the dash vents. This suggests that the box is working but maybe the vacuum is sticking or what can I do short of buying a new climate control box ??

climate control box in econ mode blows air from the windshield vents and the floor vents untill I drive over rough terrain (like a railroad track)then the air begins to flow only from the dash vents. Is there a solution?

How do you replace the vacuum head?

  • tolbert4101 Jun 07, 2010

But where is the head located so I can separate it from the control unit and is there a lager diagram of this head?

Did you pull any codes?

for now lets first look at vacuum and its control
1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance - f3f7fa4.gif

by the looks of this.... vacuum comes from the engine and then to the check valve

vacuum is teed here to the defroster door which means there should be vacuum to the defroster door at all times

in order to shut this down the vacuum solenoid diverts vacuum through the module to the dark blue vacuum line

so theoretically speaking if the HVAC module (head) is defective and does not route vacuum correctly, it will always blow out the defrost

therefore I suspect your problem is in the head

However, before replacing it I would remove it and route vacuum so that only the defrost vents work and then drive over those railroad tracks

assuming air outlet doesn't change then your concern is in the head, switches and/or connections to the head

pull codes first and if nothing is abnormal... replace the head

    in theory its simple
there may be one bolt, if I remember correctly, to separate the head from the control unit and then the vacuum lines just pull off

however, due to age and heat it will take a little elbow grease

additionally, make sure you detail EXACTLY where everything goes
Might be a good idea to take a picture before you start

If it is the front wheel drive model, you can use the climate control buttons.
Either model should clear by disconnecting the battery for 60 seconds.

Just want to know if the 1999 deville cadillac is fronmt or real wheel drive

All Cadillac Deville models are FWD (front wheel drive) after 1985. The only RWD models made were the 85-92 Brougham, 92-96 Fleetwood Brougham, the 97-02 Catera, the 2004+ STS and 2003+ CTS.

You have a bad flasher. the 4 ways have a flasher of its own. it should be located, under dash around steering wheel. if you can not find it. call or stop into an auto parts store, and they should be able to help you auto-zone etc.

You'll need to have the A/C system serviced. It is low on freon so the compressor isn't coming on, and you won't have any A/C. Usually you'll just need some freon.

Yes it is behind the glove box there are 2 behind the glove box the one you see first is the brake controller. you have to take that one out first to get to the ECM. yes it is about the size of a radio.

The climate control system will not work in Auto mode but only in Econ mode in my 1989 cadillac fleetwood. I press Auto but it goes to Econ.

Your A/C system has lost its refrigerant, and will automatically go into "ECON" at that time. System will have to be leak tested , repaired, and recharged. Hope this helps.

1985 cadillac fleetwood 4.1 will die when you slow down

The 52 trouble code indicates a long term memory loss of the ECM (for example a replaced battery one day). It doesn't show on third pass (after the third -1.8.8) so it's intermittent and not a problem when you read it out.

I would advise you to clear the trouble codes (by pressing the off and high buttons on your climate controll while in diagnostic mode). To go in diagnostic mode just press off and warmer buttons on the climate controll as you probably also used to read out the diagnostic codes.

If this codes reoccurs there is a problem in the power supply to your ECM which will make it forget the correct settings. Result is it has to find correct settings for idle everytime and you will lack power as it has to find out how much gas can be injected at different RPM's. This happend to me when my battery was dying on me last winter. Replacing the battery (I couldn't start anymore) fixed this problem for me. If your battery is ok I would expect a bad wire somewhere.

Best off luck fixing your problem.
