My ford has a leak on the right side front it smells like coolant over a two day period all the coolant leaked on the ground what do i do?


Well depending on what engine is in this vehicle, it could possibly be the water pump that is leaking or possibly a "freeze out" plug on the block. I would say it is more than likely the water pump. If you have no noticeable leaks from any of the hoses or radiator, i would definitely suspect the water pump or possibly the thermostat housing may have cracked and started to leak. My suggestion would be to look at all your hoses carefullly and then check the housings where the hoses connect to the engine block, if no signs of coolant are present, check around the water pump for noticeable coolant leaks. Hope this helps in your search for that coolant leak.

Engine light is on the heater does not always throw warm air is it the thermostat and is it an easy fix?


Hello,
Yes, it could be the thermostat, and yes it is pretty easy to fix. Here's how.

The location of the thermostat for most vehicle.

Stand in front of the car with the hood open, you'll see a black hose hooked to the upper side of the
radiator.( about 2 inch in diameter, newer vehicles about 1 and 1/2 inch, and newer small cars
about 1 and 1/4 inch. ) Follow the hose to the other end, it connects to the thermostat housing.
The thermostat is inside of the housing.( the hose usually goes to the air intake manifold, but some housings are on the side or back of the engine. )

How to test the thermostat in most vehicles;

Make sure the heater is off, start the engine and let it run for 6 to 8 minutes, ( this will allow the
engine to reach, " normal operating temperature "), from the inside of the vehicle turn the heater
temperature on high and turn the fan speed on high.
1. Listen very closely for a click sound from the engine, ( most thermostats make a click when
they open )
2. Watch your temperature guage, it should begin to lower as the coolant starts to circulate.
3. Usually within a few minutes the radiator fan will kick.

To replace the thermostat in most vehicles yourself;

Remove the hose from the housing, then remove bolts from the housing and lift the housing off
to access the thermostat. Pay attention to witch side is up on the thermostat that you remove, the
new one will have to go in the same way. Also look at the temperature rating that is stamped into
the thermostat that you take out, and make sure the new one has the same temperature rating.
(failure to do so can cause false readings by some sensors, and may start triggering error codes)

Install new thermostat, right side up, put housing back on and bolt back down, hook hose back on
to the housing. Check the coolant level. Start the engine and let it run for 6 to 8 minutes to reach,
"normal operating temperature", and look for any leaking. before you turn the engine off turn your
heater wide open and listen for a click. Most of the time when a thermostat opens you can hear a
click and may hear the coolant flowing through the system. Shut the engine off, wait for it to cool
down and then check your coolant level one more time. ( do not fill all the way up, only fill to
FULL line on resrvior.)

What the thermostat does;

It seperates your coolant into two parts. The first part is in your engine, the second part is in your
radiator and the coolant reservior. When the coolant in the engine reaches the temperature rating
on the thermostat the thermostat opens to allow the two parts of coolant to change places. Now
the cooled coolant in the radiator and reservior flows into the engine while the heated coolant flows
from the engine into the radiator and reservior to be air cooled by the radiator fan.

Need instructions for replacing thermostat on a 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.7 litre


Do not loosen radiator drain **** with system hot and pressurized. Serious burns from coolant can occur.

NOTE Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. If thermostat is being replaced, be sure that replacement is specified thermostat for vehicle model and engine type.
Instructions

  1. Locate the Cherokee's thermostat intake housing by following the top radiator hose to the engine. The hose connects to the thermostat intake. A second, smaller hose connects to the left side of the radiator hose. This is a bypass hose for the heater.
  2. Remove the two bolts that secure the Cherokee's thermostat intake housing to the engine with a socket and ratchet and lift the intake upward to drain the coolant in the hose back into the radiator.
  3. Remove the gasket and the thermostat from the engine and discard them. Wipe the mating surfaces of the thermostat intake housing and the engine off with a clean towel.
  4. Place the new thermostat, spring down, into the engine and place the thermostat gasket over the thermostat.
  5. Place the thermostat intake housing onto the thermostat gasket. Thread the bolts into the thermostat intake by hand to avoid cross-threading the bolts and then tighten them using a socket and ratchet.
Additional information:
  1. Clean mating areas of timing chain cover and thermostat housing.
  2. Install thermostat (spring side down) into recessed machined groove on timing chain cover.
  3. Position thermostat housing on timing chain cover.
  4. Install two housing-to-timing chain cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    CAUTION Housing must be tightened evenly and thermostat must be centered into recessed groove in timing chain cover. If not, it may result in a cracked housing, damaged timing chain cover threads or coolant leaks.
  5. Install lower radiator hose on thermostat housing.
  6. Install splash shield.
  7. Lower vehicle.
  8. Fill cooling system.
  9. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
  10. Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks.

Coolant leak top rear of engine near throttle body 1996 3.4 lumina vpv


Most of the time when I see coolant leaking at the rear/top of the 3400 engine, beneath the throttle plate area, it's usually coming from the intake gaskets. There is a coolant cross-over passage at the rear of both heads and as time passes the gasket will sometimes split along the sides of this passage and coolant will begin to leak out. It can be tough to see clearly whats going on in this area well enough to pinpoint the exact source of the leak so it may take a bit of time to find it. Often with an intake gasket leak the coolant will puddle on top of the block then drip down the rear side of the engine and drip off of the pan or transmission bell housing. i think you got a head gasket leak,,,if its buring coolant the only thing that will burn it is a leaking head gasket,,its probably leaking into the cylinder and burning it and leaking externally where you see coolant on the tranny,,,replace the head gasket,,,

1996 Jeep cherokee, leaking coolant when cold/ hot ok.


waterpump houseing/shaft seal is on the way out hence the water/coolant, running along the block. when hot the seal does so, when cold and depressurising seal doesnt.

1996 Saturn SL2 Coolant Leak


I have a '96 SL1. I have the same problem. I found out it was the water pump. Water pumps have "weep" holes for when they are about to die. The coolant leaks out of the hole.
