Replace trailer plug

Posted on May 31, 2010

Sorry, newbie here. Where do I find the answer to the trailer running lights on the 2004 Durango not working?
I have same problem. My trailer fuse seems to be fine under the hood. The brake lights and blinkers work fine. Hmmm?

    Thanks much
    Rex

take a test light and check for power at the pins, also try cleaning the pins on the conector. if you plug it in and the running lights still work on your truck its probably a broken wire.

Tail lights on trailer do not work

Assuning you verified voltage from the connector pins, your problem is probably a bad ground on the trailer itself.

You might be dealing with a grounding problem- better stated, a lack of grounding problem. If your trailer wiring doesn't have a dedicated ground wire, the trailer relies on the hitch continuity to complete a grounding circuit to the towing vehicle. You can test this idea a couple of different ways:
1. Unhook the trailer from the Durango, remove your hitch / ball and wire brush the daylights out of it. It may be corroded badly enough that it keeps your trailer from grounding back to the Durango.
2. When you're hooked up to the trailer and the lights are on, use a piece of wire to touch bare metal on both the trailer and the Durango at the same time. This will provide a grounding path and show whether or not this is a problem.

If this isn't the problem, your vehicle may have a fuse that protects the trailer light circuit. Check your manual for information.

Good luck to you.

No power to tail light on trailer- 2004 Dodge durango factory tow

If this is a factory light harness for the trailer hookup on your Caravan. Look under the hood for a fuse box. Many 2000+ vehicles have this with separate fuses just for the trailer lights.
