Question about 1993 Nissan Quest

Van wil not start..it has spark, good fuel pressure, the distributer pointing at number one wire and number one cilender at top of stroke.. timing belt is in tact what do i try next..

I replaced my whole distributer in my 1992 2.8 liter v-6 s-10 but my son washed off the alignment marks, so I was wanderind how i can time it? please help!!!


If you know the engine's number one cylinder location, you need to put it at TDC of the compression stroke, then you lower the distributor in so that the rotor ends up pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower on the distributor cap. As you drop it down, the gear on the dist. shaft will mesh with another gear and turn slightly. You want it ending up pointing directly to #1. Get it seated, then you can start the engine and set the timing according to specs with a timing light.

To find TDC of the compression stroke (as opposed to TDC of the exhaust stroke), pull the #1 spark plug out. Put a socket and wrench on the crankshaft pulley and turn it in its normal direction (clockwise), with your finger over the spark plug hole. As the number one piston is rising on its compression stroke, you can feel the pressure build up under your finger. You won't feel any pressure as the piston rises on the exhaust stroke, only on the compression stroke. So when you feel pressure, you know the piston is rising on its compression stroke, and you can turn the crank on around until the piston is at top of its travel-the notch on the crank pulley will now line up with the zero degrees mark on the pointer scale beside the pulley. There, TDC of compression stroke. Now drop in the distributor so the rotor tip lines up with the #1 spark plug tower on the dist. cap.

You have to put the number 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke, and then you install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower that is on the distributor cap.

Pull the spark plug from number 1 cylinder. You need a helper to turn the engine over by hand (using a socket on the crank pulley), or he can bump the starter over in very short bursts. Put your finger over the spark plug hole. When the piston is rising on the compression stroke, you will feel air pressure on your finger. Now look at the crank pulley and turn the engine on over until the zero degrees mark lines up on the timing pointer. Or you can stick a long straw or similar into the spark plug hole (don't let it drop into the cylinder!) to feel when the piston is at top of travel...see, you feel for pressure build up with finger (piston is rising on compression stroke), when you feel it, turn engine on over by hand until the piston is at top of travel-that is TDC of compression stroke. Now install distributor so that rotor ends up pointing directly to number 1 spark plug wire tower. Then follow firing order -as the rotor turns, it will follow the firing order around the dist. cap.
There are two top dead centers of each piston, tdc of compression stroke and tdc of exhaust stroke- to time the engine, you need tdc of compression-that is when the spark plug fires in the cylinder, so that is when you want the distributor in with the rotor pointing to #1.

Okay, you have to set the number 1 cylinder at TDC of its
compression stroke, and then drop in the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower. This should start the car, then you could set the timing to spec with a timing light.

There are two TDC's of a cylinder- the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. To find the compression stroke, take out the #1 cylinder spark plug. Put your finger over the hole. Now either turn the engine over by hand (with a socket on the crankshaft pulley-turn clockwise), OR have a helper bump the starter over in as short bursts as possible. As soon as you feel pressure on your finger- stop turning- the piston in #1 is rising on its compression stroke. Now check the timing pointer or scale by the crank pulley. Turn the engine slowly on over until the notch or mark on the crank pulley is right on the zero degrees mark on the scale. This is TDC of compression stroke-the piston is at top of travel in the cylinder. Put the distributor in so the rotor will be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire.

How do I adjust the timing when it won't start. I just put in a new Distributer


As long as you installed the distributor back in the way it came out, you should be able to start it and then you will need a timing light and can attempt to adjust the timing.

My 1990 g20 van will not start , new injectors,fuel regulator,gets fuel has spark, turns over fine , what should i check ?


Is it sparking when and where it should? Checking timing. # 1 on compression stroke, Ignition rotor should be pointing at tab under distributor cap for wire that goes to # 1 cylinder. Line up timing marks on pulley as labeled or even at TDC for quick reference. With # 1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke, rotor tab should be pointed at plug tab under cap, that goes to # 1.

1/ Have you fitted the spark plug leads in the proper firing order.
2/ Look inside the top of distributor Top (this is not the first time a new distributer cap has very small crack) or the rotor arm is fitting the cap properly. Hope this helps Best Wishes, Malcolm Campbell.

How do I set the distributor on a 2000 gmc jimmy? Just changed the intake gaskets, but forgot to mark the position of the rotor.


Get the number one piston up, Take the spark plug out the first one on the drivers side.Rotate the engine until the piston reaches TDC before it starts to decend back. U can use a screw driver to put in the spark plug hole.The rotor must point towards the number one spark plug. your local library will have this infor or autozone

I just got the timming belt belt replaced and all


Take a look and verify you have spark and are getting fuel; then if well check your compression. If no spark look at those components about the distributor and such. It is possible to have the timing (I am speaking of spark) 180 deg. off. It is easy to be fooled (been there done that) by seemingly having No.1 cylinder at TDC only to find it was 180 deg off. Rather then the top of the power stroke the piston may be at the top of the exhaust stroke. Check these items; it may be just that simple for you. If it is 180 off you need only to remove the distributor cap, unplug the electronics, remove the dist. and rotate the rotor 180. Please let me know how things go as I have great experience with this engine.

If it is getting spark and fuel check the timing. The timing chain may have jumped.Take out #1 spark plug and tap engine till the compression stroke comes up. To check just hold your finger over the plug hole and the compression will blow it out. Then rock crank by hand and set to top dead center. Take distributer cap off and see if rotor faces #1 cylinder. If you have spark to the plugs and the plugs are good and you have fuel timing or compression is all that is left.
