The timing needs to be adjusted via the ECU unit which can only be accessed with a VAGCOM.. its a programming computer used for VW engines that is not a standard engine computer. You can find home mechanics that have VAGCOM units that may help you out in your area by going to TDICLUB.COM. This is a VW Diesel site, but the VAGCOM is used for both and there is a list there with city and states of people who have home version (software and computer) You will find most of them like me are more than willing to share and help. You also didnt mention the mileage and last time you replaced the timing belt. The VW belts are only good for 60k miles and have to be replaced or else they stretch and slip, or worse break causing misfire, no start, etc.

Hi,
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Mechanic (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

2000 beetle , bucks , stutters , acts like it's running out of gas

So many possibilities. But I would look for arcing on the coil packs. Use dialectic paste on all the plug wire connections. Arcing is easiest to see at night.
If it is the purge valve, then opening the gas cap to relieve vacuum will temporarily make it run better.
Look for vacuum leaks.
Temporarily pinch off hoses to see if they are the source of a leak.
Try putting gas dryer in the tank, in case there is water.

Crown vic has been running rough like water in gas. new fuel filter nothing , battery is fine would not even turnover today nothing

Not turning over with a good battery could be a bad ground connection, more likely though could the starter. As for running rough "like water in the gas" most likely is one or more of the "coil packs" over the plugs have gone bad. I recommend to first get the engine codes scanned even if the engine light is not on, the computer will store the codes. look for misfire detected in cylinder #__ . That way you can try using dielectric grease on that spark plug boot to see if it cures the misfire. If this does not cure the misfire you may want to replace the coil pack. However do not replace them blindly as they are in the $50 per unit range. I have had to replace one coil pack on mine and when a second misfire occurred I fixed it by cleaning the spark plug boot and using dielectric grease. I hope this helps.

98 vw beetle misfiring after rain. New plugs, coil cas cracks????

Hi, Yes it certainly could be especially if water gets in. You should also check the distributor cap. The misfire sounds like an arcing problem so it would have to be one of those two things since you changed the rest. Good Luck!
