Try a couple of cheap fixes first.

1. replace the airfilter and fuel filter

2. start the car and let idle in park - locate the MAS (mass airflow sensor) which is located between the airfilter housing (casing) and the intake (follow the airflow line up toward the engine. In between (mid point) you'll see a black box looking unit ( will have a wiring harness coming out of it (usually on the left side).

3. With the car running (in park) take the handle of a small screwdriver or other tool, and tap the MAS several times lightly. If the car dies, stalls, or the idle hesitates or changes in any way, try cleaning it first with MAS cleaner, which can be purchased at a local parts dealer.

4. If this makes no difference, and the idle changed, the car stalled or died, then replace the unit.

5. If this is not the issue here are some other things that will cause this: (have a diagnostics done first and foremost at a local parts dealer - usually free and takes only minutes).

Try these:

If it's equipped with coil packs:

have them (if more than one) tested at a parts dealer. If none are bad then check the modular that sits just under the coil pack(s). If it is melted (white), bubbly, then it needs replaced.

If this is fine, and the packs are fine - have the alternator and battery tested. To test the alternator yourself first, start engine, then remove both terminals from battery - if car dies, alternator is bad. If not, it's good and the battery may be bad.

See your local auto parts dealer for diagnostics test to detect any codes for troubleshooting. This will more accuratly pin point what is or may be causing this to happen if none of the above are the culprits.

Have the diagnostics test performed before purchasing any parts (other than fuel and air filter - as it never hurts to do these).

If the car is equipped with a distributor {instead of coil pack(s) } replace the cap and rotor - and consider replacing the coil, plugs and wires.

Again, have a diagnostics test performed at your local parts dealer.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

P.S. - check all vacuum lines as well for leaks, cracked or broken hoses - some transmissions have vacuum lines as well, so check with your parts dealer for this as well.

Check your brake booster for a vacuum leak first.

From other sources:
The oil light that only comes on at idle or stop is due to a dirty or faulty Oil Sensor in the oil pan. They get gunked up due to a bad design and sludge build up. Easy to fix, just replace or have replaced at next oil change.
