Question about 2001 Cadillac DeVille

I have a 2001 cadillac deville and the temp gauge creeps past the half way point, mainly when sitting and kicks back down to half way.... is this normal?

This cna be normal. The Northstar engine has design issues that manifest as overheating problems, but mainly under hard accelleration...
What you describe sounds like normal fan cycling...are the fans going on and off?

Before i spend money on a maf sensor i wanted to get a second opinion on my symptoms?


Check out a new coolant sensor. Some vehicles have 2 and one works the dash gauge and the other is needed for Engine management(Fuel mix, timing). Ask at Autozone or go to Advance, or Oreilys for a second scan.
The O2 sensors control how the engine runs. Sometimes they will self-clean, but if you have a bad indication, they should be changed. I usually work on Ford brands but this is pretty universal. The scanners should also tell you which O2 is bad out of the many you may have on your car.

When i am driving my 2002 buick rendevous, the temperature gauge sits between 1/4 and 1/2. however when i have to sit idle ( ex. like at a red light) the temperature gauge creeps up to between 1/2 and...


This is normal. The gauge should sit at around the 1/2 mark. And it will go up at idle until the fans kick on then go back down some. Fans will kick on around 210 degress

  • Add a mixture of one-half water and one-half antifreeze to the radiator. Fill it right up to the top.

    Fill the overflow/coolant reservoir with the same 50/50 mixture.

    Leave the radiator cap off, turn the engine on and let it run until the radiator "burps": You will see the coolant level drop and may see or hear a large air bubble come to the top as the system burps.

    Keep an eye on the temperature gauge throughout this process.

  • 5

    Refill the radiator to the top and coolant reservoir as needed.

  • 6

    Put the radiator cap back on.

    I have a 2002 cadillac deville.it recently ran hot because the water pump tensioner broke.I replaced the radiator,tensioner and pulley and the belt.but if I let it sit there and idle the temp guage goes no...


    It sounds like you have an air pocket in the cooling system. I would try parking the car on a hill with the front of the car facing up. When it has fully cooled off, recheck the coolant level and ad more coolant if needed. Sometimes you can slowly top up the system through the bleed hole as well, do this when cold on level ground.

    Gas gauge 2001 deville reads from half to full but will not go down to low or warning of no gas


    This is a common problem on this car..i also have a '01 deville with gas gauge problems similar to this.....I have been told that its a relay of some sort on the back of the rear seats....very easy to access from the trunk after removing some "removable" carpeting....I havn't looked further into the issue yet.......( i.e. finding what relay)....i currently use the " - - gallons of fuel used " feature on the menu to calculate how much i have...call your local dealer and ask what this relay is and then buy it somewhere else...(auto zone or something)
