The bottom is the is where the coiled spring is. Just remove the old one and set the new one in. It is very important that you completely clean off the old gasket from both the gasket surfaces with a razor blade. Then make sure the surfaces are nice and smooth using some emery cloth. Wipe the areas with a clean rag and be sure not to allow any debris to enter the cooling system by stuffing rags in the openings before you start. The gasket should go on dry if it is paper. If you use RTV liquid gasket, follow the instructions on the tube. Use one or the other but not both together.

If the cooling system is working correctly, the only thing the thermostat does is make the engine reach normal operating temp in a short period of time. The engine is designed to run at 190 - 210 degrees as much as possible.
If you leave the thermostat out, it may run cooler, but you will get a check engine light at some point in time if the engine does not reach 190 degrees within 5 or 10 min. And when the check engine light comes on the performance will drop off. And it will use more fuel.

Lean codes bank 1&2 for chevy blazer

lean codes are generated by faulty heated oxygen sensors
(HO2S) that are in the exhaust manifolds before the cat converters
their purpose is to read the exhaust gasses and report the composition to the ECM so that the air/fuel mix can be adjusted to maintain correct settings

I need to know where the thermostat is in a 2004 dodge dakota 3.7 L V6

follow the upper radiator hose to the engine, drain about 1/2 gallon of coolant and then pull upper hose off at the engine, look inside the metal large nipple, that is the thermostat.
