Lean running condition A lean running condition means that the air/fuel mixture is unbalanced, and that the engine is getting either too much air, not enough fuel, or a combination of both. Optimally, this ratio should be around 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel by mass, at low or cruising loads. This ratio is known as stoichiometric for gasoline. Ideally, at WOT, you should aim between 11.5:1 (Rich best torque at WOT) and 13.3:1 (Lean best torque at WOT).
Running lean, like having your spark timing too advanced, creates much more heat during the combustion process. This can lead to piston seizure, a hole in the piston, melted spark plug electrode or other complications due to overheating. You will not be producing peak power, and your exhaust will also emit more oxides of nitrogen, arguably one of the worst byproducts of gasoline combustion for our environment.
Common causes of a lean running condition are an improperly tuned carburetor, clogged fuel line, clogged fuel filter, or a vacuum leak.
Preforming a plug chop is a good way to find out if your engine is running too lean, as you will see a powdery white residue on your spark plug in the presence of a lean condition.
On the other end of the spectrum, richer ratios will also cause lost power, however this will most likely be accompanied by black smoke (around the 9:1 fuel/air ratio area), and fouled spark plugs.

If yours is a v6 . remove the top of the intake and check the screws on the vac. chamber . If loose it can cause air to leak inside of the intake . I just bought 1 of these and it had p0171 and p0174 codes for bank 1 and 2 being too lean . I checked mine and half of the screws were loose . There is a service bulletin on this that I found . GM has some springs available to help hold it down . I just resealed and tightened mine and so far so good.

You need a better code reader, ie "Mechanic". The ECM should control "Running rich or lean". Is engine light? Quote, Service SOON or Service NOW. SOON is usually minor, but needs to be found in the codes. "NOW" need to be checked immediately.

When putting my 2000 Chevy cavalier in gear the headlights flicker and then the service engine light comes on and headlights go out.

As long as you have the service light or any
dash lights lite after you start the motor,you
have to check for obd2 codes first & resolve
thoses issues first.

i would say thats your o2 sensor on the right side there might be 2 of them not sure on a vw but the o2 sensor will cause it to run lean

When the service engine soon light a yellow light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

You have a generic code reader
everyone needs one

You can not how ever get MFG Codes
only those starting with PO

You should have instructions with it
You usually only have 2 buttons

One button cycles thru data & the
other clears or resets the MIL Lamps

Turn key on & write down any codes,
as you push the left button ,I believe
to cycle thru them

Then start engine & see if they are still there
& the same

Then use the other button to clear them
& road test,to see what comes back

The manual won't help much

Give me the codes or look on the
internet. Just put OBD2 & the code #
in search engine.

Your PCV valve can cause most of those problems. If it has a hole in it that would be the first thing to replace. The PCV valve is designed to only let air travel in one direction and would explain why it is running too lean if there is air getting in where it shouldn't. Cheers, Dan

OBD2 "check engine lite" shows

Both codes are system too lean bank 1 & bank 2. First place to start is any obvious vacuum leaks. Look for broken,collapsed or missing vacuum lines. Check egr valve & intake manifold also.
