Question about 1985 Ford F150

1 Answer

My 1985 Fords F-150 will not start. The dash won't light up when I turn the key on. I have replaced the battery, ground cable, and the starter solenoid. I can jump the solenoid, and the motor turns over, but no ignition when the key is turned toi the on position. Any clues??????

Starter switch is bad if theres nothing when you turn the key, or the neutral safety switch is bad.

Daniel, If battery is known to be good, could be bad connections at battery, starter/solenoid, or ground on engine/frame, battery cables also could be bad with build up of corrosion internally. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Truck won't start but the horn honks when I turn the key.

Sound like a wire loose. could be the earth cable to the engine, or the main power cable from the battery to the fuse box/ignition switch/starter.

Grab a test light go down to the starter, hook to a good ground and probe the battery cable. If that has power probe the solenoid engage wire( its the little one) have a helper turn the key to start if that gets power replace the starter.

I got a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. when i put the key in the ignition the head lights, and the dash light comes on but it won't even turn. i change the starter and got a new battery and it still won'

well if you have a dvom/voltmeter check the power at the starter terminals. the main terminal should have power all the time the key wire should have power only when the key is turned to crank engine. if you have power at both then i would start looking at grounds

Want start.Battery new, starter, alternator and cables checked.Fuses checked. When key is turned lights on dash work and door buzzer works and when you try to start all I hear is a click under the left corner...

You say the battery is new and that the rest checked but wasn't replaced. Seems like your either not getting enough voltage to the starter or the starter solenoid has failed, in which case, you'll have to replace the starter.
Check the ground strap too. Thats a ground connection that goes from the engine block to the frame of the car. You also say you checked all the cables, but did you replace them? Cables can be corroded inside the plastic cover and may not be able to carry enough current even though they may look ok from the outside. It takes alot more voltage to kick in the starter motor than it does to light up the dash.

Lights come on but the car wont start

clean your battery terminals and all grounds to the battery cables and check if the battery has 12 volts to 14 volts if not charge the battery then load test it.
if the dash red lights go dim when you turn to start position your starter is bad or your battery is too low. You can have someone hold the key in the start position while you tap the corner of the starter housing and see if it turns over. The starter bushings are worn if it turns over.(needs starter replaced)If it does not go dim then the problem may be in the electrical switch for the ignition. The switched power to the starter solenoid comes directly from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid (purple) Test if you are getting power to the starter.
If not then check from the ignition switch mounted to the steering column. Make sure you pay attention to which wire goes to which post if you remove it for a bench test. If you get them backwards it wont do anything. .If oil leaking on the starter you will want to fix the oil leak so it doesnt ruin the starter probably valve cover gaskets leaking oil.

check cables to battery.if battery is 5years or older replace.
a bad ground cable and a weak battery will cause the starter to do as stated.
