is an assisted steering belt easy to replace? what cost are we looking at? are there any other likely causes for the noise we're hearing?

Hi this could be one of your wheel bearings might be worn and is slowly getting worse, to test, jack up the front of the car either side dose not matter which ( preferably the near side ) then grab the top and the bottom of the wheel and pull and push at same time, if there is allot of play the the wheel bearing is at fault, if no play, just spin the wheel quite fast if you can, and listen for a whining noise or even a graunching noise, this will be the bearing also, but has worn the ball bearings and not the inner shell ( hence the pull push method to start with ) also just check the power steering fluid in the reservoir , make sure that is not low as the power steering pump might be whining with air....hope this helps

Hi.

The problem is the assisted steering belt.

The belt is worn and makes high pitched noise when steering because it has lost adherence with the power steering pump pulley.

Have the assisted steering belt replaced.

Regards.

Ginko.

2004 dodge ram 1500 power steering problem

this problem is evident in vehicles that have a strut suspension
at the top of the strut there is a plate that is the top plate for the suspension coil spring
above that plate in the rubber bush is a bearing
if that bearing has failed then the plate will not turn and when you turn the steering wheel the power steering is in effect winding up that coil spring
that makes low speed turning very heavy on the power steering system especially at low rpms
have the front suspension checked for that bearing failure ( both sides ) by an accredited suspension specialist shop
standing stationary and turning the wheel you may even hear a creaking or groaning noise as the spring is flexing on the strut
if you do not have a strut suspension , take it to a power steering specialist shop for a proper diagnosis

Take it in and get it aligned, explain to them what happened and have them loo it over while its up on the lift, just to make sure there isnt anything bent!

My car whines when I steer it

You must check the Power Steering Oil level, its prpably a little low. You can top it up with ATF (automatic transmission fluid) Also check that the belt is ok and not cracked or contaminated by oil or water. Hope that helps

Power steering, there is an audible noise while turning, is it out of fluid or a problem with the power steering hose?

I have the same problem. I hear a whining/whirring noise when parked, turning either way, and even when driving at slow speeds. The noise gets worse when turning at slow speeds :(

A/c suddenly stops blowing

Maybe your blower fan is faulty.
The whine you heard could be dry/seized fan motor bearings or foreign matter (such as leaves/twigs) in the fan.
If fan motor is faulty it will need to be removed for repair; but first check as below:-

1) Check fuse is ok.
2) Check motor runs if power applied directly to it. - If motor OK, check:-
3) speed resistor module (usually in fan ducting, in air flow),
4) fan switch operation.

Cracking noise heard/felt when turn to the left

Have you determined where the noise is coming from? I have heard noises like you describe when a Constant Velocity joint has gone bad in a front wheel drive car. You need to determine which side it's coming from left or right and if it is coming from a worn CV joint your best fix is to have the axle replaced and have the other one checked to be sure it's not going to fail shortly after you replace the one that is bad.

Steering difficult(slow) and a whining noise when turning wheel

The whine is most likely your power steering pump. Check the fluid in the pump. If you are low on power steering fluid you may have a leaking hose or fitting or the seals in the pump may have began leaaking. If you continue to run the auto without power steering fluid you will burn up the power steering pump very quickly.

Noisy engine idle and stutter at low or high speed

I had the same problem (X-type 2.0d 2004). The stutter was cured on mine by getting the ECU fashed with the latest firmware. This is a known problem and the update does cure it (£28), I didn't bother with all the tests the garage wanted to.
The noisey engine at idle is the alternator belt. It resonates at idle and causes the noise, There is a modified bottom pulley, tensioner and belt kit, but it is rather expensive ~£200 plus fitting (around 4 hours labour). Mondeo's have the same problem but that kit doesn't fit the Jag.
Hope this helps
