Question about 1998 Ford Escort
Hi pete this could be a few things, but i will just start with the simple ones, MAF sensor,you can try unplugging it and seeing if the car idles normally if it does then that will be that if you can get access to a diagnostics system even better, check to see if the MAF is letting enough air into the system or even too much air would do it, knock sensor is another thing and also the o2 sensor on the exhaust, you may not be showing any error codes from the ECU but try that anyway and also the throttle position sensor, you will unfortunately only be able to check these through the diagnostic system but these are the things that will make it run unevenly...hope this helps

Small vacuum hose on intake manifold gets soft and causes a vacuum leak which in turn causes your engine to surge.
