On new cars, they don't necessarily have a cap right on the radiator. There will be a reservoir on the side of the vehicle, it may or may not be easily visible. But look over top of the fender wells and what not. if you still cant find it, check in the owners manual, sometimes under fluids, they will show a engine compartment picture of where certain things are located. you might get lucky and have a labeled pic in the manual. Good luck

In the early part of the 80's a plastic reservoir were starting to show up in European automobiles. While other manufacturers stayed with traditional aluminum cored radiators. By the 90's lower cost of manufacturing and high tech material used, manufactures superseded to a separate reservoir located away from the core itself helping maintain lower temperature by keeping the coolant level at it highest part of the engine bay. This keeps the coolant filled within the engine itself, air pockets (bubbles) being lighter find their way to the reservoir and vented out to atmosphere vial relief valve or cap.

Now that's been explained your reservoir could look like a big white plastic ball with a cap you can open to refill with coolant. It could also be similar to a gallon water jug you find in your fridge. If you are not sure if it were the windshield washer reservoir, the cap should take some effort to remove due to pressure while the other doesn't. Remember to use filtered water when you want to mix it with coolant, not just plain tap water. Good luck and hole this will help you and drive safe.

You may add into the coolant reservoir also....If this is a V6 Camry- The cap is atop the Left hand part of the engine. You will see the radiator hose running above the engine to it. 4 cylinder camry- cap is on the radiator.

If there is no cap on the top of the radiator, you add fluid to the coolant reserve to fill the radiator.

I have a 97 jeep grand cherokee...the radiator hose is collapsed. Does that mean I need to replace it or add more fluid or something else?

Hi , it sounds like you have caused a vacum i.e. not enough water in the system. You have to check you car when the engine and water has cooled down. The expansion tank is were the water level has a line you must fill it up to the level line with water when the engine is cold. And when its cold weather you have to use antifreeze to top up the level.

I own 95toyota 4 runner. I need help on.the best process to drain, and refill engine coolant. I thank every body for any tips and advice I recieve.

To drain the engine coolant, it is best to do it when the water in the engine is cold. Remove the radiator cap. Unscrew the hose clamp on the lower rubber pipe that connects the radiator to the engine.
Let the water flow out completely. Connect up the hose and clamp when done. Refill the radiator with water and enough antifreeze recommended for your vehicle. Before replacing the radiator cap, start the engine and watch the water level, add water if necessary. Once the level remains constant, replace the radiator cap.

How to know when there is enough antifreeze in radiator

Hello there and welcome to fixya
Checking your radiator fluid:
antifreeze2.pngEvery modern vehicle has a Radiator fluid overflow compartment that is translucent so you can see where the coolant level is without removing the cap. On the side of the compartment there is a full line and an add line. the coolant should be between the two lines. If it's below the add level add 50% water/coolant to the full level.
The green line is the full line, the red line is the add line in the picture.
If you don't have antifreeze but you need fluid, add distilled water, not ordinary tap water, so mineral deposits won't build in the radiator and cause corrosion or blockage. However, you should keep the correct ratio of water and coolant to prevent corrosion and for the highest level of overheat or freeze protection.
To check the fluid IN your radiator
radcap.png you will need to remove the radiator cap. DO NOT remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. The contents are under pressure and many people have gotten severe burns by removing the radiator cap when it is too hot.
Notice the word "caution" on the cap in the picture.
It goes on to say the contents are under pressure.
IF you have no choice, but to remove the cap when hot, use a towel and remove it slowly to release pressure before you get the cap off.
The fluid in the radiator should be at the top of the radiator.

Make sure you keep 50% water/coolant mixture in the radiator. Some people put more antifreeze in during the winter, but never put more than 70% coolant. It will reduce it's ability to carry heat away from the engine and prevent corrosion.

The radiator was emptied out and i want to add antifreeze and water? there are 2 areas that say antifreeze goes here?

  • One is the radiator and the other is an overflow tank. Sometimes anti freeze will back pressure a bit and need somewhere to go and other times the antifreeze gets low in the radiator. That is the purpose of the radiator.
  • Put the antifreeze in the radiator fist and then add to the reservoir. Pay attention to the cold/hot level fill on the overfill tank.
  • You need to find out where all that antifreeze went to if the radiator was empth. Pull the dipstick and look for a chocolate milk look on the oil. This would be a head gasket or a cracked head.
  • Otherwise keep an eye out for a leak and repair it soon.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Vehicle overheatd...where do you put in more water?

You really shouldn't just add water. You should add a mixture of coolant and water.

You will need to wait until the engine is cold. This will allow the system to depressurize. NEVER open a hot radiator. Squeeze the upper radiator hose to be sure there is no pressure. It should be soft enough to easily pinch the opposite walls of the hose together.

Remove the radiator cap (see image). Use a funnel to avoid spilling. Coolant is poisonous. Fill the radiator to the top. Replace the cap.

Check the overflow bottle (see image). The coolant should be right up to the line that says 'Full Cold'. Remove the cap and fill accordingly. Do not overfill this bottle. Doing so will cause coolant to be expelled at normal operating temperature. Just go right up to the cold line.

Start the engine and check for obvious leaks. Drive the truck for about 3 or 4 minutes. This will purge air pockets and bubbles from the system. Turn it off and allow to cool. Open the radiator cap and top off as necessary. Double check the overflow.

Where do one out water for the coling system and

Two systems used on Jeeps...On those with a radiator cap, add to radiator then top off recovery bottle. On those with no cap, there is a tank with a screw on cap usually on the right fender. Add coolant there. Use antifreeze, not water or inside of engine will rust. Keep mix at 50/50. Never open either system with engine hot. Best to fill either system with engine running and heater on hot.
