The valves are hydraulic type and not adjustable, if they are noisey you have a bad cam or a bad lifter. normal operating temp on this engine is up to 240 F, yes they run hot, but if it stays in the normal zone no mattery high high it is ok

Why adjust the tappets when engine is cold?

adjust the tappets when cold allows you to get the engine running with out causing valve or engine damage
you do the final adjustment when hot as the stem expands in length and takes up the cold adjustment
if the cold adjustment is too close because you didn't make that adjustment the the valves will not seat properly when hot and will burn the edges of the valves

Cold: Intake 0.30mm, Exhaust 0.50mm.
Hot: Intake 0.20mm, Exhaust 0.040mm.

Kohler engine runs rough

if you have 2 coils then that is a possibility but if there is only one coil then no. It could be a plug or HT lead or possibly the valve clearance for that cylinder needs adjustment. Check when hot as if the adjustment is done cold then when the valves are hot the stem increases in length and any clearance set will be lost

Make sure the cooling system is not plugged up, poor coolant flow can make your engine run hot, and a plugged heater core will not allow heat in the cabin in the winter.

Heater blowin cold air

Sounds like your heater blend doors aren't adjusting from cold to heat. If you google "blend doors" you can read about them. They are usually pretty hard to get to, the dash needs to come out. Hope this helps! Jonathan Lavezzo www.lavezzoconstruction.com

We have a 90 Quattro V8. Last summer I changed

Your V8 Audi has two necessary sensors that malfunction due to their placement in extreme heat on the lower left side of the engine just inside of the header/down pipe connection. They read the flywheel position for the engines computer ECU. The reference sensor is always suspect, but the speed sensor may need to be changed, as well. The wire connectors to the sensors that sit above the FL suspension can be tested, or just replace both sensors to get some quality time with your V8.

My car does not start if it is heated up during previous runnig

This is one of those unsolved mysteries which is known to afflict Charade owners. By the time you go looking for the problem, the engine decides to behave.

The usual supects are: burned or improprely gapped points, faulty supressor, corroded distributer cap and leads, faulty hot idle compensator, overheated ignition coil, fuel filter, bad spark plugs.
