Question about 1996 Mercury Sable

The car would cut out at 3500 rpm. I changed the spark plugs and when i started it the car was knocking and doesnt seem to shift properly. It runs worse than before I worked on it

CEL/MIL, or "Check engine", warning lamp in the cluster is glowing?
key on, and running, that means , SCAN IT.
3500 can be. (a redline limit)
1: misfiring, is one way.
2: bogging, fuel starvation. is another or...
3: or the EFI RPM limit for LIMPHOME, the scan tool and FSM
tells you about limphome mode. (dead sensors, or TBW unhappy)

you working and 07 plus car with no FSM.?
that not going to be good, see the manual and all the calibrations?
some of these need flyby wire , throttle by wire- TBW) calibration.

try it.
look up the DTC errors ,once scanned.

You will need to check the code that triggered the check engine light, To see if that will lead you to your problem.Auto zone will check your codes for free.

I would say it is a map sensor. It will cut off in 5 miles or 35 miles. You just never know. It always starts back until the next time, no trouble.

The 1st>>2nd shift on the Subaru 4EAT automatic transmission can be more abrupt, but 3500 is too high.
Is there any delay when shifting from Park to Drive?
Does the Power light flash on startup? If it does, you can pull the codes by following these instructions.

This trans has 'bands' that can be adjusted. I'm not 100% sure they affect the 1st>2nd gear shift, but maybe they need adjusted.

Im having a problem with my 97 sunfire it idles really good and check engine light is not on but will not rav above 4000 rpm and it cuts out and dropps back to 3500 rpm i diconnected the cat and its doing...


Start with changing the fuel filter...it might be plugged. Also you might want to run some throttle body cleaner from general motors. It comes in an spray can and it is squirted into the throttle body intake while reving the engine to clean out the throttle body system of carbon. And after that run a full tank of gas with fuel injection system cleaner in it. If that does not work then pull those spark plugs and check for gap and wear. Also check the plug wires...if they are old then replace them.

yes its related to knock sensor because car is running rich in fuel, and car runs of on safe mode, so overdrive will be off. have you and a friend replace it. remove intake assembly, then intake manifold, but first remove your anifreeze from radiator, trust me you want to remove antifreeze! their are brackets by the fire wall to hold down the manifold, thats the hard part is taking it off and putting that on since not to much space to work on it. on the block you'll see the two knock sensors, has 2 wires each, knock sensors cost between 150- 200 a piece, still cheaper than dealership putting it on. also buy some liquid gasket because you will need that. after putting it all back together reset the ecu and you should be fine,

check your fuel pressure, should be 40lbs+ at idle. If you dont know how to do this, have a friend or a shop check it for you. I had same problem, no power at all would barely run ect,, turned out to be fuel pump.

Corolla 96 motot starts to cut and/surge in and out


firstly remove the inlet fuel line at the filter and and blow down line with a compressor ,removing fuel cap first,if this doesnt work then it could be fuel pump pressure of air flow meter ,but iam often wrong with this sort of thing and it turns out to be the radio,all joking aside try blowing out fuelline doesnt work??then take it to dealer for computer check

Engine Cuts out at 3500 RPM


Sounds like you need to replace the MAF sensor its the unit on toyota vehicles that calulates how much Air intake is going into the throttle body and then sends a signal to the ECU of your car which adjusts your Fuel injector compensation. When your MAF Sensor is malfunctioning it will throw the fuel curves out of wack and cause your car to what mechanics call "lean out" or "running rich" its basically your getting too little or too much fuel at higher RPM's and the motor is choking from too much fuel and not enough air. Hope this helps let me know if it doesnt so i can continue to troubleshoot for you via internet
