Question about 1998 Cadillac Catera

1 Answer

At start-up (80° F) Oil Press goes to 65+psi. When engine warms (mid temp gauge) O.P. lowers to 25+ psi & oil light may/may not come on. If on, goes out on steep (10°+) grade. Just had flush+oil+filter; oil level is full (cold check after). Problem is?

Check your oil level or oil press. sensor. it's either on the side of the block or in the side of the oil pan.

Personally, if you're comfortable driving it, do it. If your uneasy about it, have it towed. A $60 tow bill is alot cheaper than a $3000 engine. But if my earlier reply seems to fit the bill, than go for it.

Does anybody know what the oil pressure specs for the 2006 crown victoria lx 4.6L at idle and at normal operating temp? Mine is reading between 15 and 25 psi. Has 149,0000 on it.

15 seems low. Ford gives a spec of 40-70 psi with the engine speed @ 2500 rpm engine hot. Most cars I see are around the 25 psi @ idle. If your idle is lower than it should be it will make your pressure lower. This should be a direct reading on a good mechnical engine oil pressure gauge.

Cat 3126, Oil press. drops off from 50 psi. to 17 psi as it warms up

According to their website the minimum oil pressure is 41 psi at idle. I'd suggest verifying the oil pressure with a manual gauge directly plumbed to the engine. If it is 17 psi when the engine is up to temp. then you may have issues with the bearings. You should take an oil sample and find out what the metal levels are in your oil to determine if the bearings are going

94 chevy 5.7 4X4 has oil pressure at 40 psi when starting engine after warming engine oil pressure drops to 15 psi no engine noise?

15 is ok at idle, 10 will return the light on in the cluster. I would not worry about it unless it goes lower. The causes can be worn bearings, but if they were that loose you would hear a know for a second on cold start. Have you checked the pressure with a mechanical gauge to verify the notoriously inaccurate electric system

1999 Z-71 with high mileage (224,000) I lose oil pressure as the engine warms up. Cold start I run 40-50 PSI but after it warms up it drops to around 20-25 as long as your foot is in the pedal. When I...

I dont want to be the one to bring you bad news, but you most likly have engine wear. Bearing clearances, oil pump clearances all are getting out or tollarences. you can improve this by using 15/40 mptor oil , or heaver, but that is a patch. for a long shot change the oil presure sending unit or better yet use a mechanical gauge to verify the true pressure

you may have a bad oil sending unit the oil light works off of oil pressure i would start by changing the oil sending unit and if the light still comes on then you have bigger problems. get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and hook up and check the oil pressure after the engine has warmed up to operating temp you should have at around 30 psi but can survive with 10psi but might be time for a rebuild. if no oil pressure then you might have a broken shaft between the oil pump and the distrubuter. if the engine is running and not making any out of the normal ticking, knocking sounds probably just the sending unit though, they are about 25 dollars and i believe its right above the oil filter on the 6 cylinder.

One thing you should get checked is the oil pressure. You could have an oil pump that is going out or getting weak. Also depending on how regular you are with your oil changes it is possible that you could have a sticky lifter. The oil pressure at idle should be 4 psi and 25-80 psi at 3k rpm.If it is less than 4 psi at idle do not do the 3k rpm. This is check with a warm engine.(normal operating temp).Hope this helps.Good luck.

I have an 02 wrangler and the oil preasure goes down when Idling is that an oil pump going bad?

First we would need to know when this occurs. Asuming the oil level is at the full mark!. If the pressure goes up during acceleration and down at idle when engine is fully warmed up, then this is normal. An engine requires 10 psi of oil pressure per 1,000 rpm ( ex. 20 psi at 2,000 rpm, 25 psi at 2,500 rpm, and so on ) . If the gauge is moving back and forth erratically at idle , i would say the gauge is bad. If it drops to 0 while accelerating I would say your oil pump is bad. If from time to time it seems to work and other times it seems not to work, I would say the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge is bad. If the pump failed you would start to here a Knocking noise from the engine in a short period of time. Use the above scenario's to narrow down what it may be.
