Real sluggish at take-off,looses power - 56ca351.jpg This should be how the wires are attached on your engine. The firing order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 and the distrubutor rotates in a clockwise fashion. If you are still unsure. Take out the #1 cylinder spark plug, bring the piston to top dead center, then check the rotor and see what terminal it is pointing to, this is #1 cylinder.

Does vehicle have the check engine light on? Wit the exhaust stinking and hot, it is most likely fuel leaking inside the intake manifold causing the engine to run excessively rich. To verify this, check the exhaust to see if it is blowing black smoke. Also, connect a fuel pressure gauge to the test port on the fuel rail.

Check fuel pressure with key on, then see if fuel pressure drops off. The pressure should only drop a couple psi in 10 minutes. If the pressure drops rapidly, suspect a fuel leak inside the manifold or a bad fuel pump.

Coil/coil packs may be bad not producing enough spark or maybe fuel filter, pressure regulator or fuel pump. You should be able to test fuel pressure at the rail for fuel injection. I am not sure because you didnt list the year of your vehicle but there are also sensors like throttle position, and crank position that may be an issue. If you have a OBD2 port go rent a reader at an auto parts store and see what the codes are.

I have a 2001 dodge ram 5.9 2500, engine was running sluggish, changed plugs wires, distributor cap, rotor cap, and crankshaft sensor, now vehicle won't start at all, I'm sure I have the wiring right

Recheck the plug wires. If they are right, put cylinder one on top dead center. pull the distributor cap. It should be where it is supposed to be or 180 degrees off(at number 6). If not there, someone has just moved the wires to make it run. Reset the distributor.

1991chevy lumina starts hard, runs sluggish and then dies when put into drive. already replaced computer

Having replaced the computer, best thing you could do now is a complete tune up-new spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, air and fuel filter. Change the oil and check all fluids. Have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Check if your catalytic converter is blocked or clogged-if bad, they will plug up and stop the car.

There must be something loose. Check that it's getting power form the battery side and triple check all the connections to the distributor.

Hi. Changing the coil first was a good move. Since it did not solve this illusive problem now change the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and I believe your problem will be solved. Joe

Just yesterday no power going up hill and a little rattle had to tow home help!!

Check your rotor, if it is burnt then it will cause the problem that you are describing. Remove your distributor cap (mark your plug wires so you know where they go back on the cap) Look inside the distributor cap. If the metal areas are burnt badly then it needs to be replaced. The rotor will be on top of the distributor after you remove the cap. If it is burnt then you need to replace it as well (it only has 2 screws holding it on).
If all of the above things look alright then it is most likely your transmission (check your fluid),

I just changed all spark plugs and wires with boash platium +4 spark plugs and boash wires. the problem i'm having it's only firing on 5 not 6, i checked all wires and there in the right places. I have...

1. Double check the connections at BOTH ends of the wires- at the distributor and at the plug. 2. Make sure each spark plug boot has proper connection. 3. Double check the plugs to make sure that they are all gapped correctly and no contamination. 4. Hold each spark plug upright and make sure that the ceramic insulator near the tip isn't loose and sliding down and possibly covering the metal tip..(had this happen more than once) 5. Check for spark at each plug (be careful) 6. Open the distributor cap and double check all the exposed metal connectors are clean. 7. buy one extra plug and change out the suspect plug.

I had the same problem with my 85 cj7 this week, I relpaced the ignition control module, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and the the coil; still had no fire to plugs. the problem turned out to be my distributor, replaced it today and she fired right up. Most likely it was the pick up module in the distributor that went bad.

1987 GMC Jimmy Distributor cap and Rotor replacement

A diagram may not be needed as its a reasonably easy fix to do on your own.the distributor ca p will only fit on properly one way because at the base of the cap locaters can only fit the distributor if they line up.When doing the spark plug leads do them one at a time and if nessecary write or mark leads as 1,2 etc .The rotor can only fit on one way but put a mark on the distributor to show where the rotor was pointing when you took it off and if it still points there when the new one is fitted. When changing distributor cap and leads they have to go to the correct place.Pays to mark the outside of distributor cap where the locating bits are On the new and old one.Fit the new cap and rotor then take a spark plug lead and fit to new cap 1 at a time. You can tell by lining up the marks on the outside of the distributor cap when you hold them one on top of the other.Good luck
