What should we check when we have those pesky rich or lean codes? The most common issues for lean codes are:

1. Vacuum leaks - check for failed or loose vacuum lines, leaking intake gaskets, intake air tubes loose or any other source of un-metered air leaks (leaks after the Mass Air Flow Sensor)
2. Restricted fuelcode 171 engine runs lean - 2_bing.gif filter or bent/pinched fuel system lines
3. Incorrect input from other sensors, such as the Mass Air Flow Sensor, which may not always drop a separate code
4. Engine misfire – Yes I know this one may seem weird. You might think that if there is a misfire then you will have all that unburned fuel and it should read rich; right? Well the O2 sensors read only oxygen content in the exhaust, so if you have all that unburned fuel from incomplete combustion then, you guessed it, you also have all that unburned oxygen. High O2 content in exhaust equals a lean reading! There are also some other possibilities such as an internally leaking EGR system, (but this will typically set a separate code). A leak in the exhaust system before the O2 sensor will also cause incorrect readings. And always check for after- market modifications. These can throw a wrench into the works! The only other possibilities (however unlikely), are wiring issues, computer concerns or a bad O2 sensor! .

I have two engine codes 171 and 174 engine is running fine how do i repair them


Well code 171 is telling you the fuel mixture is too lean for bank one and code 174 is too lean bank two.
So the most common cause is low fuel pressure.

Code 171 and 174 are for bank 1 and 2 running too lean. The engine has compensated as rich as it can go, and it is still to lean. This does not necessarily mean your mixture is bad, but something (a sensor) is telling the ECM to correct lean. The oxygen sensors alert the ECM to how lean/rich the exhaust is, and then the ECM trips a code. Maybe you have a bad oxy. sensor, but since there are 4 of them (2 per bank), I don't think they could all go at once.

Well, code 336 is for a problem with the crank sensor, and code 171 is for fuel system too lean bank one which is the side with cylinder one. Since you have checked fuel pressure and I will assume fuel volume is good, the crank sensor or circuit could be at fault.

Why the check engine light comes on and off runs great


The check engine light is on to tell you the computer has found a problem that will affect performance, gas mileage, or emissions.
Such as the code 171 you asked about.
Code 171 is for the fuel mixture on bank one being too lean. The O2 sensor is telling the computer the fuel mixture is too lean and the computer can not make it rich enough.

Running lean on bank 1 and bank 2 codes 171 174 runs great when codes are off once they come on loss of power not much but you can feel it


P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Note: This DTC is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.

Symptoms: You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration.


Causes: A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
* There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.


Possible solutions include:
* In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
* Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
* Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

Try some injector cleaner in order to see if the lean condition improves. Lean conditions can sometimes be caused by o2 sensors or other sensors that are not within specifications.

switch, we run off snitches. 171 174 banks 1 & 2 Lean. Most likely cause are Upper Intake Manifold Gaskets, failed seals. It's not 1990 on. It's 1996 and on OBD2.

I've owned one of these. you can try to clean the MAF with brake cleaner. but if that doesn't work you'll have to replace it. the car can't tell how muich air is entering the engine to properly meter the fuel. so what you get is a lean misfire. fix it soon. running the engine lean means it's running hot internal temperatures which can damage expensive things ie. catylitic converters.

first check out for o2 sensor if its faulty this can show up.but if its proper.Evaporative emission control system leak very small 171 System too lean (bank 1) 174 System too lean (bank 2)

1996 Neon is blowing black smoke from the exhaust.


If good, clean fuel, good spark etc. 171 is lean mixture according to my sources.. Thus I'd say if engine is being told from O2 sensor that mixture is lean, that would explain all the extra fuel getting ( dumped ) fed to engine. I guess i"d start by changing O2 sensor. (Oxygen sensor.) If it has 2, do the one upstream, closest to engine on exhaust manifold or pipe.
