After changing the front and rear pads; drums; and rotors the parking brake needs to be adjusted tighter how?

If you look under the van on the driver side (usually) you'll see where the two cables from the rear inter-connect with the main cord to the front. Here, you should find an adjustable bolt that you can tighten. If it is not here, it may need to be tightened from there rear tires.

If you have drum brakes in the rear, these are most likely "self-adjusting" brakes, which may interact with the emergency brake. Everytime you back up, and apply the brakes, you are activating the self adjuster (you would have seen this located at the bottom of the brake system between the two brake pads. This is the self adjuster. Try going in reverse at about 5 miles per hour, and hitting the brakes firmly (not slamming on them). Drive forward again, and firmly press the brakes. Go in reverse again, and apply brakes firmly again; (do this about 4 or 5 times to get the rear brakes adjusted). Try the emergency brake again and if still not tighter, purchase or look in your repair manual as to how to adjust the emergency brake.

Unless you have replaced the cable, it should never need to be adjusted. If you can reach under the vehicle, and when wiggling the parking brake cable, if it is taut (not sagging), then it is probably adjusted properly. What usually causes the parking brake cable to appear mis-adjusted (the parking brake won't hold the vehicle), is that the self-adjusters in the rear drum brakes are not working properly. This is bad because it means that you are not getting proper braking from the rear brakes as well as having the parking brake issue. This can cause premature wear to the front disc brake pads/rotors and affect braking power and control under certain stopping conditions. Front disc brakes work so well that many people never realize that their rear brakes aren't doing their fair share. The purpose of the self-adjusters in the drum brakes is to keep the rear brake shoes at a consistent distance from the drum's inner surface as the shoe lining wears down. If the adjuster works correctly, the parking brake will always stay in adjustment. You CAN adjust the parking brake cable, but if the problem is actually with the self-adjuster, you are masking the real problem, and later on when you need to replace the rear brake shoes, you will find it impossible to put the drum back on over the shoes as the parking brake will have the shoes pushed out too far. Have a mechanic check out the self-adjuster mechanism. It is always a good idea whenever you replace the rear brake shoes to replace all the rear brake hardware as well. You don't replace rear brakes nearly as often as the front ones, and the cost of the hardware is minimal in relation to the satisfaction of knowing that non-corroded parts will work better and provide longer service than the older, gummed-up and rusted hardware that is currently installed.

Check to see if you have rear rotors or drums. If you have rotors, there is another set of brakes within the rotor housing and they are drum brakes.

What you need to do is make a decision about how much work you really want to do to fix this correctly. Your best bet is to take off the rear rotors or drums and inspect the rear shoes or pads BEFORE making any attempt at tightening the system.

If you take the extra time to look at this beforehand, you will have a chance at removing the drums or rotors before they are seized up. Most of the parking brakes will automatically adjust as they are used. Some of the primitive designs on cheap cars have to be manually adjusted.

Either way, you need to have material on the shoes or pads AND the surface they ride on has to be machined clean, not rusted or pitted.
This is a big problem on the drums within the rotors. They rust terribly if you do not use them and the surface becomes a grinding stone against the pads or shoes.

This is why I say to inspect them before trying to tighten stuff up. The emergency brake components have a racheting action if they are self-adjustable. If they are manually adjustable, the adjustments can be inside the console by the brake lever or under the car before an equalizing brake cable.

1994 Jeep GC rear drum brakes grab on damp days and low speeds. All hardware has been replaced including new shoes and drums.


The Caliper Adjustment Lever is what adjusts the caliper - ensuring the brakes pads are in proper placement to the rotor for effective braking. The lever must be cycled in order to keep the calipers adjusted properly. The only way the lever is cycled, is by the usage of the e-brake.

Remove the cable from the Caliper Lever. Be careful when handling and removing the spring.

Initial testing: After you have removed the ebrake cable - kneel in front of the rotor and give it a gentle shake (as if you were removing it). Do you notice any PLAY between the pads & rotor?? Make note of this.

Emergency brake adjustment


There are 2 ways. It has rear drum in hat style brakes, meaning it has pads and rotors for basic brakes, but incorporated in the rotor is a drum with park brake shoes inside. Remove rear pads and rotors, check the condition of the park brake shoes. Tighten the star wheel adjuster while installing the rotor, keep repeating until rotor feels snug pushing on. Repeat other side reassemble. If still doesn't feel tight, there is an adjustment nut on the left rear side on the cable. The nut is where the 2 rear cables meet, it can be tightened. Do not tighten first, if you ever need park brake shoes later they will not allow the rotors to go back on.

I forgot my parking brake on with my 98 grand prix gt and i traveled slowly for maybe a couple miles..or less. service engine soon light came on after and parking brake light shuts on and off still but...


on that car there are park brake shoes are inside the drum part of the rotor. the pads do not apply for the park brake. if you remove the rotor you will see the shoes. you would also see an adjuster at the point were the shoes meet @ the bottom you can adjust them to make the park brake work better. if you see the shoes are melted or the friction material is completely gone you should replace them.

didnt state what brake is causing problem and if it is constant or only under braking---if a disc brake than need to remove caliper and examine pads for proper seating and damage also piston is not seized or cocked slightly and need to check rotor -not warped as well as caliper bolt pins not bent or rusted --on a rear disk check parking brake behind at rear inside of rotor if binding can adjust brake cable------if rear drum check adjustment-retaining springs and drum for warp out of round

How to remove brake rotors on a 1996 ford explorer


How to replace the rear brake pads on a 1995 through 2001 Ford Explorer The system utilizes a drum-in-hat type rear brake rotor. The integral drum allows the use of a drum-and-shoe type parking brake system. All other components are similar to their front disc brake components Remove the two bolts on either side of the brake hose with the rubber boots. Do not remove the four bolts where the axle ties in. The two bolts to be removed require a 10mm socket/wrench. Loosen the pads from the caliper Rotor Removal In order to take the rotors off (replace with new or have them machined), it is best to loosen the emergency brake shoes. To do this, behind the rotors, in the back there is a rubber plug, remove that and you can use a screw driver to engage the teeth of the adjusting screw, turn it clockwise to loosen, usually 10-20 teeth. Usually this means turn it downward. After this, it may still be difficult to get the rotors off without tapping them. Use a rubber mallet and hit them from behind. Before really whacking the rotor, make sure you have loosened the adjusting screw enough. It may take heavy swings of the rubber hammer to do this. It will eventually break loose. Parking Brake You might want to check the parking brake while you are here. To remove:
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Remove the outboard return spring.
  • Remove the adjusting screw spring.
  • Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and nut.
  • Remove the front brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove both parking brake shoes and the inboard return spring.
  • Check the parking brake lever for excessive wear and replace as necessary.
To install:
  • Position the front parking brake shoe to the backing plate and install the hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the rear parking brake shoe with the inboard return spring.
  • Position the brake shoe adjuster screw and nut on the shoes and install the rear shoe hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the brake shoe adjuster spring.
  • Install the outboard return spring.
  • Adjust the parking brake shoes and install the rotor, caliper and wheel.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
ADJUSTMENT
  • Measure the inside of the drum portion of the rear brake rotor
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Using Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Subtract 0.020 in. (0.508mm) from the first measurement, adjust the brake shoes to that size
  • Adjust the parking brake adjuster screw until the outside diameter of the parking brake shoes measures 0.020 in. (0.508mm) less than the drum measurement.
  • Install the rear disc brake rotor.
Reassembly Reassembly is easy. Put new or machined rotors back on by sliding them over the lugs (they should slide on easily.) Loosen bleeder valve (having a catch bottle handy is good). Push calipers in slowly (using a c-clamp or large channel lock pliers), close bleeder valve. Put on pads. Lubricate metal clips with small amount of anti-seize. Re-adjust the emergency brake by turning the opposite direction from loosening. Refill the brake master cylinder

98 Ford Escort, Emergency brake doesn't hold car. Rear brakes okay, adjusted cable to 3 clicks. What am I looking for?


If you have rear rotors that look like a rotor mounted on top of a drum brake, you will have an emergency brake inside the drum portion. The rear brake rotors are not flat like the front rotors for this style.

The E brakes have brake shoes and they have "Star" wheels for adjustment just like the regular drum brake. You really need to take off the rear rotors to inspect the inner drum portion. If you do adjust the E brakes without looking at the drum part, chances are the drum is pitted and rusty and you will be lucky to stop once before the E brake linings are ground off.

The other type of E brake works off the Rotor pads. You will see the brake cable attached to a lever on each wheel. There will be an Equalizing cable connecting both rear wheels with an adjustment point joining the main cable. Although the 3 clicks moves the main cable, to have both rear brakes equally tight you need the Equalizing properly adjusted.

Those are the things you need to look for.

  1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  2. Remove brake drum. If brake drum cannot be removed easily, insert a suitable screwdriver through hole in backing plate, then push adjuster lever away from adjuster and back of adjustment tension.
  3. Remove tension spring, using a suitable tool, then remove rear shoe hold-down spring and pin. Remove rear brake shoe and anchor spring, Fig. 7.
    1. On Land Cruiser models, remove front hold-down spring using a suitable tool, then disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake bellcrank, Fig. 7.
    2. On Pickup, 4Runner, 4WD T100 and 4WD Tacoma models, remove front shoe hold-down spring and pin, using a suitable tool, then disconnect No. 1 parking brake cable from No. 3 parking brake bellcrank.
    3. On 2WD T100 models, proceed as follows:
      1. Remove E-ring, then automatic adjusting lever and C-washer, then parking brake lever. Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder using a suitable container to catch fluid.
      2. Remove wheel cylinder. Remove following parts from wheel cylinder: two boots, two pistons, two pistons cups and spring.
    1. On models except 2WD T100, remove front brake with strut, then disconnect parking brake cable from front shoe. Remove parking brake cable No. 2.
    2. Remove adjusting lever spring, then the adjuster from front shoe.
    Inspection
    1. Measure brake drum inside diameter. Inside diameter should be 11.61 inches,
      1. Measure brake shoe lining thickness, Fig. 3. Minimum thickness should be .04 inch on models except on T100 models and .039 inch on T100 models.
      2. Inspect brake lining and drum for proper contact and replace drum or shoes as necessary.
      3. Inspect wheel cylinder for corrosion or damage.
      4. Inspect backing plate for wear or damage.
      5. Inspect bellcrank components for bending, wear or damage.
      6. Apply a suitable lubricant to backing plate contact areas.
      Installation
      1. On 2WD T100 models, proceed as follows:
        1. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to piston cups, pistons and boots.
        2. Assemble and install wheel cylinder.
        3. Connect brake line to cylinder.
      1. Apply high temperature grease to following parts:
      1. Apply a suitable lubricant to adjuster bolt threads and end.
      2. Assemble adjuster to lever, then install adjuster lever spring.
      3. On Land Cruiser models, install parking brake lever cable to parking brake shoe, then attach cable to bellcrank.
      4. On Pickup, 4Runner, 4WD T100 and 4WD Tacoma models, install No. 1 parking brake cable to parking brake lever shoe, then attach the other side of cable to No. 3 bellcrank.
      5. Position front shoe in place with end of shoe inserted into piston, then install shoe hold-down spring and pin using a suitable tool.
      6. Assemble anchor spring to front and rear shoe, then install rear shoe with end inserted in piston.
      7. Install rear shoe hold-down spring and pin, then the tension spring.
      8. If necessary, adjust bellcrank as follows:
        1. Lightly pull bellcrank in direction "A", Fig. 8, until there is no slack in part "B".
            1. Rotate adjusting bolt until dimension "C" is .016-.031 inch.
            2. Lock adjusting bolt with locknut, when connect parking brake cable to bellcrank.
            3. Install tension spring.
          1. Ensure proper parking brake travel.
          2. Pull adjusting lever cable upward, then release and ensure adjusting bolt rotates. If bolt does not rotate, check for improper installation of rear brakes.
          3. Adjust strut to shortest possible length, then install drum.
          4. Pull parking brake lever fully upward. Repeat process several times.
            1. Remove drum, then check for proper clearance, Fig. 4. Clearance should be .024 inch. If clearance is not as specified, check parking brake system.
            2. Install brake drum, then bleed and refill brake system.
            3. Install wheel and tire assembly, then lower vehicle.

FRONT ROTORS & PADS
  1. Remove caliper.
  2. Remove cap and snap ring, Fig. 10, then remove cone washers with tapered punch.
  3. Insert suitable length bolts into flange bolt holes, then tighten bolts evenly and remove flanges.
  4. Remove free wheel hub cover and snap ring, then remove nut, spring washer and cone washer with suitable tapered punch.
  5. Remove free wheel hub body and gasket.
  6. Remove locknut, lock washer and adjusting nut.
  7. Remove axle hub and brake disc as an assembly.
  8. Remove oil seal and inner bearing from hub.
  9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs., then back off nut. Torque nut to 18 ft. lbs. Using spring scale attached to hub bolt, check that preload is 1.4-12.6. Install lockwasher and locknut, if equipped. Torque locknut to 35 ft. lbs., and recheck preload. Secure lockwasher by bending one tab inward and one tab outward.
  1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove clip and hole pins, Fig. 9.
  3. Remove anti-rattle spring and shim(s) if equipped, then remove brake pads.
  4. Lubricate caliper housing with suitable brake grease at pad contact points.
  5. Reverse procedure to install.
