Question about 1991 Alfa Romeo 164

When car warms up charge drops to 12 Volts

When car is running for a while and is iddling, alternator charge drops to 12 volts and every electrical device goes berseck meaning that ac blower stops and goes.
Apparently something is grounding the charge. And you hear a ticking noise like a flasher going ofrf behind the dash.
Please help!

What is causing the battery to drain?


Running the car will drain the battery it if it's not charging ! An if your charging light is on it isn't charging ! Did you check power an grounds on the alternator ? There is a single heavier wire on the back of the alternator, this should have battery voltage ! You may want to take this to a ASE certified repair shop !
Functionality
With the ignition switch in the RUN position, voltage is applied through the warning indicator I circuit 904 (LG/RD) to the voltage regulator. This turns the regulator on, allowing current to flow from battery sense A circuit 35 (OG/LB) to the generator field coil. When the engine is started, the generator begins to generate alternating current (AC) which is internally converted to direct current (DC). This current is then supplied to the vehicle's electrical system through the output (B+) terminal of the generator.
Once the generator begins generating current, a voltage signal is taken from the generator stator and fed back to the regulator S circuit 4 (WH/BK). This voltage feedback signal (typically half the battery voltage) is used to turn off the warning indicator.
With the system functioning normally, the generator output current is determined by the voltage of the A circuit 35 (OG/LB). The A circuit 35 (OG/LB) voltage is compared to a set voltage internal to the regulator, and the regulator controls the generator field current to maintain the correct generator output.
The set voltage will vary with temperature and is typically higher in cold temperatures and lower in warm temperatures. This allows for better battery recharge in the winter and reduces the chance of overcharging in the summer.
Battery Positive Output (B+) Circuit 38 (BK/OG)
The generator output is supplied through the battery positive output (B+) terminal on the back of the generator to the battery and electrical system.
I Circuit 904 (LG/RD)
The I (ignition) circuit 904 (LG/RD) is used to turn on the voltage regulator. This circuit is powered up with the ignition switch in the RUN position. This circuit is also used to turn the charging system warning indicator on if there is a fault in the charging system operation.
A Circuit 35 (OG/LB)
The A (battery sense) circuit 35 (OG/LB) is used to sense battery voltage. This voltage is used by the regulator to determine generator output. This circuit is used to supply current to the generator field (rotor). The amount of current supplied to the rotor will determine generator output.
S Circuit 4 (WH/BK)
The S (stator) circuit 4 (WH/BK) is used to feed back a voltage signal from the generator to the regulator. This voltage is used by the regulator to turn off the charging system warning indicator. The S circuit is fed back externally on external mounted regulator generators.

    • With the engine running, the charging system warning indicator light should be off.

  1. If the customer concern is verified after the initial inspection, refer to the Symptom Chart to determine which tests to carry out.
    • The charging system warning indicator is on with the engine running (the system voltage does not increase)
    • Circuitry.
    • Voltage regulator.
    • Generator.
    • GO to Pinpoint Test B .
    Your whole problem is the alternator is not charging , a couple tests with a volt meter would tell you !

Charge at idle only


Your alternator is faulty. A properly working alternator produces 13.5 to 14.5 volts at idle and raised rpm's. The battery itself is 12 volts and a raised rpm demands more electrical power, therefore your drop.

Replaced battery. still would not start. Cleaned treminal of all corrision. cranked fine. however 1 day later would not start. jump started . drove a couple of miles but when I turned on lights, engine...


Sounds like a bad alternator. Drained your battery and when you turned on the lights it took all the power left in your battery. When you drain a battery down that far, they are real hard to jump, and coupled with the alternator, the car is not producing enough current to start and stay running.

I would take the alternator off and take it to oyur local auto parts store to be tested. If bad, replace it and charge the battery fully before starting. Then check voltage at battery with motor running. Should be 13.2 -14 Volts DC. If not, you may have a bad battery cable or blown fusible link. (especially that if the alternator tests good).....Mike

2001 nissan frontier new alternator and new battery but battery wont stay charged


Check all your wires that go to the starter and alternator, back to the battery. Something is not right in that circuit. You will probably need a wiring schematic to check properly. If you need anything else, please let me know. I am here to help.

Alternator only putting out 12 volts into bettery


Altenator should put out at least 13.8-14.2 volts at idle. If not either the altenator is bad or not getting the signal to turn on. More than likely a bad alternator though.

Car will start when it is being charged, after charger is removed car still runs, when car is shut off it will not restart


could be battery or alternator. Check voltage at battery with engine running. Should be at least 14 volts. If yes, alternator is working.
After charging, battery voltage should be over 12 volts, with engine off. When starting, battery voltage should not drop a lot. If battery voltage does not drop while trying to start, you may have a bad connection--loose terminals.

The gauge could be wrong,it could be defective,have the alternator checked,at the battery,it should read from 13.65 volts to 14.25 volts with the head lights on,and the ac blower on high,with the engine running.If the alternator is new,check for 12 volts at the back of the alternator with engine off,if there is not 12 volts on the large wire,on the alternator,then the circuit is broken somewhere.Just install a new wire,of equal or larger size.Leave the original wire on the alternator,and just add a new wire,larger would be better if possible,and run it from the alternator,to the positive side of the battery,it will fix the problem.

84 CK TRK, 2500, 5.7L 55,000 miles have replaced alternator twice - battery still reads 12 volts. Trickle charge on battery OK and engine starts up OK - terminal 1 on alternator wire (brown) reads 2.4volts...


On some of the older style GM's you can take that brown wire and cut it and take the end leading from the alternator and hook it directly to the hot terminal on the alternator and just leave it hooked up and it will work. But I have ran into the occasional problem where leaving it hooked up will drain the battery when the vehicle isn't running. Hope this helps..
