Question about 1990 Volvo 740

1 Answer

I have a 1990 volvo 740 gl, the car will turn over but will not start. Checked the fuel line at the engine, no fuel. Replaced pump and fuel filter on frame. Still no fuel, checked wiring to the fuel pump, no power. In fact when attaching ohm meter, it shows continuity from one wire to the other. What do I do next?

How many fuel pumps and relays are on a '90 volvo 740 GL

  • You have two fuel pumps. A main fuel pump and an in tank fuel pump and one fuel injection/pump relay that turns the fuel on for the both of them at the same time and each fuel pump has a dedicated fuse.
  • So your vehicle has 1- relay, 2 pumps, 2 fuel pump fuses [1 for each pump ]
  • The relay and both fuses are located under the drivers side of the dash in a little fuse/relay panel.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

1990 volvo 740 tubro car idles but stalls when in gear

There are several possible causes for this. Air Mass Meter, fuel pump, fuel filter, vacuum leak. I would start with the fuel pump. These cars have two fuel pumps. The main pump is under the car and you should be able to hear it whine when you turn the key to the on position. The secondary or transfer pump is located in the tank. I have seen these cars start and idle with only the transfer pump operational. The fuel filter is located next to the main pump under the car. It is silver and about the size of a soda can. On a car of this age it should probably be changed as a matter of simple maintenance.

RAN OUT OF GAS PUT 2 GALLONS IN TURNS OVER HOWEVER IT WONT START

Yes. All cars have fuel filters. The most common location is under the chassis by the fuel filler. Look for a little plastic cylinder with a pair of hoses going to it.

88 740 volvo cranks but shuts off within minutes, has new fuel pump filter and relay

You may have to bend the conections on the fuel pump relay, so they fit tightly. Try gently twisting it l/r, while turning the engine over.
Hope that's it.

sounds like you have a computer glitch. i would take it to any auto shop and pay 50 bucks so they can take a look at your e.c.u. (engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

Volvo 740(1990) i replaced my coil and change the battery, it started, then went 50 yards the it died and now it just turns over, but won`t start, is there anything else it could be? thanks

Many things can cause this on your 740. Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, rpm sensor, MAF sensor, radio suppression relay. I've never seen the coil fail on these era Volvo's, ever. And I've diagnosed at least 50 of these with stalling problems. Check the codes, and when it wont start, check for spark and fuel pressure, you're likely missing one of them.
