At this point, replace the VSS(vehicle speed sensor which is located in the tail shaft housing of the transmission. The code will probably have to be cleared using a scanner but should take care of the problem.

ok are there more than one speed sensors on the tranny? and would the speed sensors on the two front wheels be a factor also?

    Kori Policy May 29, 2010

The ones at the wheels are strictly for the ABS system. There will only be 1 sensor on the the tail shaft housing. This sesnor relays information about the vehicles speed in relation to the shift patterns as well as so you know how fast you are going.

  • jnero402 May 29, 2010

ok so just to be sure, the vss on the tail end of the tranny also sends information in relation to the abs system as well?

No. This sensor is solo. The ABS sensors are seperate. The rear will have one in the top of the differential and the front will have one on each wheel.

Sounds like 1 of 2 things .. Firstly remove the abs fuse from the fuse panel under the hood.. Drive the vehicle and see how it works.. If it works fine .. Abs sensor needs changing... If not this will require a mechanic to check it.. It looks like the transmission shift solenoid.. And that's what your error code points too. Hopefully the abs was causing this error ..

Where is the speed sensor located on a 2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71.

Speed sensor for the ABS system or for the speedometer?

If the speedometer and it is four wheel drive than the speed sensor will be in the rear housing of the transfer case.

My 1995 Chevy Tahoe won't shift gears as I'm

Probably the speed sensor on the transmission. It would cause both problems. You should also have a check engine light with a trouble code for the sensor.

07 Chevy Silverado The motor caution light came on then came on the ABS light. seems like it's in third gear I hooked up the Solis I am getting three trouble codes one under the engine one under tran

Try checking the abs madule, that could be causing all the problems, such as the trans code and engine code. Also check the grounds cable maybe rusty or lose. I had a Chevy Tahoe and it was almost the same problems and it turn out to be the abs madule. Hope this helps good luck.

Tahoe speedomoter abs break light on

More than likely you have a bad speed sensor on the transmission. If that goes bad it will make the needle bounce and give you false readings. The brake system sees this information and tells the computer something is wrong. The ABS system has monitors on all four wheels that measure wheel speed. Also at worst if your cluster is bad it will do the same thing. Start with the easiest less expensive part. There are tests you can run too but you will need a service manual. Good Luck.

Trubleshooting p0502 honda element

P0502 is a Vehicle speed sensor issue:
P0502 Description The vehicle speed sensor outputs a 4 pulse signal for every revolution of the rotor shaft, which is rotated by the transmission output shaft via the driven gear. After this signal is converted into a more precise rectangular waveform by the waveform shaping circuit inside the combination meter, it is then transmitted to the ECM. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of these pulse signals.

speed_sensor.gif Symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Speedometer may not work properly
- Transmission shifting problem Possible Causes - Vehicle speed sensor harness or connectors is open or shorted
- Vehicle speed sensor
- Combination meter
- Faulty ECM.

It may be a faulty speedometer with a short inside, or a short on speedometer wirings or connector.

Whenever car vibration cause the wiring to short, there you lose speedometer and trans functionality.

You need to access the speedometer connector and wirings to
instrument panel to fix this.
