Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix
I had this problem.if your headlights are on automatically and on 1-4 setting when fan doesn't work the lights go out then its the ignition switch the dtrl and auto headlights are on the same power source from the ignition switch as the fan motor and it goes quite often and available from dealer and most aftermarket.

You described the symptoms of a bad blower resistor. It's located on the heater box, most likely behind the glove box or just above the front passengers footwell. It will be a dealer only item and shouldn't take more then a half hour to replace with common hand tools.
