Hi! The ECM (engine control module) and MAF (mass air flow) sensor may need attention in this issue. The ECM controls the fuel and air mixture of the engine and the MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially the idling. Once replaced I believe you'll be good. HOpe this helps and have a good one!

Ok when were the coil packs last changed? When was the last tune up? Any cracked hoses? Fuel filter change? All these can cause issues. With a 14 year old car tune up would be the first suggestion. Most people drive until there call stalls with no preventative maintenance these days then its hard to find what has caused the issue.
Good luck and check/replace those parts.

Why wont my 1996 ford explorer start it turns over but wont start

You need to determine whether or not it is getting fuel and spark. It needs both to start. Remove one plug wire and hold it close to the engine while someone cranks it over. There should be spark from the plug wire. If there is spark, you will have a fuel supply issue. Possible fuel pump/relay/wiring/fuel filter/injectors not working to name a few. If no spark, possible crank sensor/ignition module/wiring.

I changed the fuel pump but the van still won't

And you know the fuel filter is good? Could be injector problem: just as a check, spray some starting fluid into the intake and see if engine runs a few seconds. If it does, it is a fuel problem. Check injector fuse, as a start. Check fuel pressure. Check injector circuit. If engine won't start with starting fluid, check if you are getting spark. Problem may be in the ignition system.

The first thing to check is the ignition timing then the spark plug gaps. There are specific settings/size for the above and must be correct for the car to run smoothly.

Van stalled and wont start

If it turns over fast enough to start you might have a ignition problem or a fuel delivery problem (fuel pump). If it is turning over slow you probably have a bad alternator or battery. First check all your fuses and go from there. To see if the fuel pump is turning on, just turn on the ignition and listen for a buzz or whine from the fuel tank area and if you do not hear anything chances are that you need a fuel pump if you hear it turn on then off you have fuel and then you need to verify if you have spark from the ignition system which should be done by a professional because of the high voltage from the coil. Hope this helps.
