1999 Kia Sportage will not start unless shifter is played with

1999 Kia Sportage
While in park, I turn on ignition switch, engine turns over, but will not start (like not getting gas). There are no initial trouble lights on dash (they should be on when first cranked).
Switch to neutral, accessory and engine trouble lights come on and then car will start in neutral or you can put car back into park (lights stay on) and then it will start.

Hi! I believe that the car's PCM (powertrain control module) is faulty or needs to be reprogrammed for the dash lights are tripping which most likely the cause. I do suspect that the fuel pump is faulty for its not getting gas from the fuel tank to the engine. The fuel pump will need replacement to get the car running. Once replaced I believe you'll be good. Hope this helps and have a good one!

I have a 2000 kia sportage, the gear shifter is stuck in park, the brake lights won't come on when pressing the brake, changed the fuse, still nothing. Any ideas?

If you have power at the brake switch it could be a faulty switch. Usually the shifter can be taken out of park if you unlock the key switch but don't turn it to the on position.

Kia sportage 2001 keep locked in ignition aac mode, will turn on but wont come out

I had the same problem. I finally figured out how to unlock it. When you put vehicle in park, without pushing the button, pull on shifter until it clicks. Now I don't have the problem anymore. Hope this helps.

Some makers used Vacuum releases for their emergency brakes which had a Vacuum switch connected to the shift assembly. This would account for a stumble if Vacuum vented out through this switch.

More common for shifting stumble to occur from Park to Drive, engaging a load on the engine, not to stumble to a freewheeling Park position. Sounds like idle speed control is sluggish to stabilize the motor.

You also have idle speed control problem with A/C, kind of shows that A/C was what kept the engine running because when you turned the A/C off, the car died.

I am going to give you some Websites for wiring diagrams. amd with free wiring info upon registering your vehicle.

It seems that the base Idle speed control is not working and the A/C idle speed control is.

Also check for Vacuum leaks on the intake manifold by spraying water from a pumpbottle on the seams of the gaskets.

Check ignition Relay or ignition switch for random cutouts. The fusebox layout is on the Autozone site.

I hope my solution helps.

What would make check engine light not come on

Every time you recycle the ignition switch you erase the trouble code and start all over again. Go into history codes to check for problems.

2002 kia sportage will not in park, but will start in nuteral

Neutral safety switch is the culprit... it is to prevent your car from starting when in gear... it is usually under the shifter console.

Will not come out of park!

The 2001 Kia Sportage is equipped with a brake safety interlock. When you depress the brake pedal you should hear a click coming from the base of the shift lever. The click is a safety interlock which prevents accidental shifting out of park unless you have your foot on the brake. This is the most common cause for the vehicle shifter to be stuck in park. There is a switch that is activated by the brake pedal, the switch in turn energizes an interlock, which makes an audible click, allowing movement of the shift lever out of park position. If you do not hear a click when applying the brake it is most likely either the brake switch contacts or interlock solenoid.

1999 kia sportage turns over but wont start.chek engine light not coming on when ignition is switched on

This sounds like the ignition fuse, but you may have a dead battery too. check connections on the cables and see if it will start with a jump. You may have left the lights on or some other device and drained the battery. If it won't start with a jump then check all your fuses one at a time including the ones under the hood. The diagram on the covers should have one saying ignition but check ALL the fuses any how, A domino effect can sometimes happen taking more then one fuse out. Let me know how it turns out so far.
