Hello,It's normal for the cat to get hot - given they've replaced everything (just about) that could cause your problem - they have not looked at the injectors and O2 sensors. If you had something burning in the engine bay it was most likely electrical and you should look for burnt wires. You probably have a short in the ignition system or fuel injector wire harness. It's nearly impossible to diagnose a problem like this without having the car first hand. It must be throwing check engine light codes

Thanks

Engine cylinder numbering

problem is that what auto zone told you was not complete
misfiring is more from faulty injectors/ injector control/wiring than from plugs and HT leads
so if you have replace the leads one for one then the problem will be the injectors

distributor cap and rotor problem - there is your problem. If you do not put those suckers back in the same exact position, with the exact same markings, it will cause the car to fire the spark plugs at different times, causing miss fire and some times no firing at all.

Started engine and was running rough Check engine lamp came on Used code reader and found code p0306 Remove plugs Compression test no.6 was 175 and the rest were 150 replaced spark plugs and retry Still...

You've done a great job of trouble shooting thus far. I would certainly suspect the injector after all of that. But, I didn't see anything about you replacing the spark plug itself. I would try that first as a crack in the insulator (even hairline) will cause mis-fires. If the spark plug doesn't fix the mis-fire, it cold be caused by a bad fuel injector, bad signal (like a loose harness or bad wire) to the fuel injector, or a leak or valve issue on that cylinder.

Opened hood found 1 spark plug wire on top of motor and not connected to anything now motor is mis-firing what to do

Hi,

Locate the spark plug which is missing its lead, then press the lead back into the spark plug cavity (in the engine).

Changed plugs on a 1999 f-150 engine now I have a engine miss

check you dont have a broken lead removing them one at a time with engine running will show you which cyl is not firing check plug wasnt cracked when being fitted change lead double check firing order if the engine didnt miss before the plugs were changed then this course of action should fix the miss its easy to cracl spark plugs when fitting if the plug socket does not have rubber insert carbon leads only need to be pulled to hard or bent to far to damage the carbon fibers that run through them check that you dont have two leads crossed this is a common mistake with v8sand is easy to do

Number two spark plug keeps mis fireing. rough

it may not be the spark plug it could be the spark plug lead itself or where it plugs into the distributer, check for corrosion, replace the lead, also check if the spark plug is full of carbon,if it is you may have a problem in that cylinder...hope this helps.....cheers

well it may run and all but it could be mis-firing and would degrade performance. I would make sure to put all the wires on in the correct order. If it runs fine, then it might all be on right after all but if any are in the wrong place, you would notice but not to much considering it is a four cylinder, sometimes you never notice a mis-firing cylinder. Point being is the wires do need to be in the right order for the car to run smooth and correct. Hope this helps.
